Kentucky Derby 2017 News and Updates

Isn’t it amazing how one three-year-old colt can capture the attention of an entire nation? Nyquist will enter the 2016 Kentucky Derby contest undefeated at 7-0 and is heavily favored to win. While the thoroughbred wasn’t immediately scouted for his speed, his efficient stride caught the interest of his now owner, J. Paul Reddam. Since his purchase in 2015, Nyquist has won over $3 million in his seven races and isn’t looking to slow down any time soon. Getting ready for Churchill Downs is no small task, however, and the horse’s team will need to make sure he avoids injury in training. The contest takes place on May 6 and 7 in Louisville, Kentucky. We have a great selection of tickets available for purchase now!

The Kentucky Derby opens this weekend, and at least 22 entries for the Derby are confirmed. The entries for the horses have now closed, and the pill pull will happen live on April 29. Although the exact line up is not yet known, experts have already started to publish their predictions for the weekend. For the Derby, experts predict that the top five horses will be American Pharoah, Dortmund, Carpe Diem, Frosted, and Mubtaahij. The top five contenders to watch for the Kentucky Oaks, which goes on at the same time at the Derby, are Condo Commando, Stellar Wind, I'm a Chatterbox, Lovely Maria, and Birdatthewire. 4/22/15 - The 141st Kentucky Derby will be here in no time. The derby will be held on May 1-2 in the famous Louisville, KY Churchill Downs arena. Many of the hopeful winners of the Kentucky Derby are scheduled to be worked at Churchill Downs this week. Included in those are War Story and Mr. Z who are running the track on April 22. War Story is scheduled to work out for five furlongs with Dylan Davis as his rider before Mr. Z hits the track as well. Don’t forget about the Kentucky Derby favorite, American Pharoah. American Pharoah worked one and a half miles after the renovation break with Jorge Alvarez aboard. See who is going to take home the big prize on May 2. Tickets for this exciting event start at $65 a piece.

4/16/15 - One of the most anticipated horse races of the year is right around the corner. The 2015 Kentucky Derby will be held on May 1-2 in the Churchill Downs arena in Louisville, KY. Leading up the two minute horse race, the stakes are high and the predictions are discussed over and over again. This year, a team hasn’t been deemed as the favorite yet, but there is still time. There are many contenders qualified to take home the victory, including Dortmund. Dortmund won the Santa Anita Derby by four and a half lengths and is predicted to be able to have a lot of gas left in the final turn in Louisville. Right on Dortmund’s coattails is American Pharoah who won the G1 Arkansas Derby. This is your chance to see all of the action live. Tickets start at $38 a piece.

1/13/15 - The first winner of qualifying points for the 2015 Kentucky Derby is El Kabeir of Zayat Stables, getting his third overall win of his career. Even though it was cold and rainy, El Kabeir is off to a great start with 21 points to get into the starting gate at Churchill Downs. Last year, it only took 20 points to make the cut, so the horse is in a comfortable position without pressure to continue to win. Tickets for this exciting race are already on sale at Razorgator, starting at only $57. Make plans now to be in Lousiville, Kentucky on May 2. Experience the race from the clubhouse, the infield, or the grandstand. If you love horse racing, there’s no better place to be during the race.

Kentucky Derby History

Known as “the most exciting two minutes in sports”, the Kentucky Derby is also one America’s oldest and most prestigious sporting traditions. The first Derby, held at Churchill Downs in 1875, had about 10,000 in attendance. Today, the event regularly draws over 150,000 spectators on the first Saturday in May. The Derby finishes off a week of festivities in Lexington that also includes the Kentucky Oaks, held the day before the Derby. The Kentucky Derby is the first leg of the Triple Crown for three-year-old thoroughbreds. The second leg is held two weeks after the Derby at the Preakness Stakes in Baltimore, followed three weeks later by the Belmont Stakes in New York. A 2014 Triple Crown winner would be just the 12th in history and the first since 1978.

The average price for a ticket to the 2014 Kentucky Derby is $1203, over three times more expensive than the Kentucky Oaks, which is averaging $377. In 2013, Derby tickets reached an all-time low the week of the event. All sections of the historic Churchill Downs provide a memorable experience. The most affordable options are General Admission Infield tickets. While it doesn’t offer the best vantage point to watch the racing, the Infield is well known for its partying. By contrast, the Millionaires Row offers the best view of both the track and of the rich and famous fans in attendance. Whether in the Millionaires Club or Infield, Grandstand or Clubhouse, derby hats and mint juleps are a must on race day.
