In Major League Baseball, a .500 record is nothing to be ashamed of. This is exactly where the Pittsburgh Pirates found themselves at the beginning of September. On Sept. 8, the Pirates were 69-69 and in third place in the NL Central. On the negative side, however, the Pirates are well out of postseason contention, meaning the team must regroup and give it a shot next season.
September didn’t start off on a good note for the Pirates. Pittsburgh dropped its first five games of the month to extend a losing streak to eight games dating back to the last week of August. This brings the Pirates’ record down to 67 - 64 and puts them at third place in the National League Central. Unfortunately, none of these statistics are likely to get them to the postseason, but Pittsburgh still has a few more chances to turn things around. The Pittsburgh Pirates have been looking absolutely unstoppable lately, winning the best of three matches against both the Milwaukee Brewers and Philadelphia Phillies. They may have met their match, however, in the Seattle Mariners. The Mariners came to visit PNC Park on Tuesday night, and proved they weren’t afraid to battle the home team. In fact, they absolutely crushed the Pirates’ hopes after coming back from a three run deficit in the second inning. Seattle silenced the Pittsburgh crowd by scoring three unanswered runs in both the third and fourth innings, winning the game 7 - 4.
