Legendary power punk band, Pennywise, formed out of Hermosa Beach, California in the late-80s. The group's moniker is derived from Stephen King's horror novel of the same name and it's memorable character "It." Pennywise did not reach a wide audience until the 1995 release of About Time, riding the renewed popular interest in punk rock music. Their acclaim stems from the ability to weave funk-metal and skatepunk into hardcore sound, accompanied by more optimistic lyrics than some of their contemporaries.
Pennywise consistently puts out music, having released 10 studio albums across their prolific career, and are one of the best-selling indie punk bands of all time. The group was on the dawn of Green Day-proportioned success, but internal strife and the suicide of bassist Jason Thirsk, obstructed the Pennywise's growth. The high school friends grew stronger after their late-90s turmoil and recruited Zoli Teglas (Ignite) when their original lead singer amicably parted ways with the group.
There hasn't been a better time to buy Pennywise tickets than now. With frontman Jim Linberg returning to the lineup in 2012, you can see the original Pennywise (Fletcher Dragge-guitar, Randy Bradbury-bass, Byron McMackin-drums) in all their hardcore glory. Kicking off 7/29 in Pittsburgh, the three groups will tour through the end of summer, wrapping up 9/11 in Council Bluffs, IA.
