Minnesota vs. Oklahoma City is the fourth of five Christmas Day games. There are number of intriguing storylines that should make this an entertaining matchup. Heading into December, Minnesota was 5-12, while Oklahoma City, despite losing superstar Kevin Durant to free agency, was 12-8 and in fifth place in the Western Conference.
Even though they’ve struggled this season, the Minnesota Timberwolves can be a dangerous team. It is filled with young talent, led by budding star Andrew Wiggins. The former lottery pick out of the University of Kansas is averaging just under 23 points per game. But he’s hardly the only youngster putting up big numbers. Second-year player Karl-Anthony Towns averages 21 points per game. He racked up a career-high 47 points Nov. 30 against New York. Point guard Zach LaVine is averaging just under 20 points per game.
The Oklahoma City Thunder’s Russell Westbrook is putting up monster numbers and is on track for a historic season. As December began, Westbrook was averaging 30 points per game to go with 10.3 rebounds and 11.3 assists. The triple-double machine has terrorized opposing teams with his versatile play.
Minnesota and Oklahoma City met on Nov. 5, with the Thunder prevailing 112-92. Westbrook had 28 points in the previous meeting, while Towns led all scorers with 33 in just 31 minutes. In the Nov. 5 meeting, the Thunder led by just six at halftime but outscored the Timberwolves 31-19 in the third quarter.
