The Boston Red Sox…
Duh. We’ve got to list the World Series champs. Don’t take your eyes off these guys. They’ve retained nearly all of their top offensive talent and some sports experts, particularly those at MLB.com are calling for a repeat, at least in the AL East. (Plus, what’s better than a beer, lobster roll, and game at Fenway Park?) With star players like AL MVP Mookie Betts, JD Martinez (who had 130 RBIs last season), and pitcher Chris Sale, the Red Sox could definitely win their division again this year… but don’t expect the Yankees to give them any slack.
…and the New York Yankees
New York’s boss, Hal Steinbrenner, said his team focused on pitching in the offseason (instead of signing Bryce Harper or Manny Machado like many hoped they’d do). Steinbrenner actually thinks they’re better than last year, saying that they’re looking like a “championship-caliber team” even in March. The Yankees have an MVP-caliber Aaron Judge (who has hopefully taken care of that shoulder and wrist), Luke Voit, a healthy Greg Bird, and the addition of James Paxton, Adam Ottavino, and the re-signed JA Happ. The AL East is always a fun division to watch and you can bet it’s going to be a battle between these historic rivals all season long.
Los Angeles Dodgers
The Dodgers have been National League Champs and World Series runners-up for back-to-back years now, so you can bet they’re itching to win a title. They won their division for the sixth straight year in a row in 2018 and we don’t see that stopping any time soon. Sure, the Colorado Rockies made it a close season in the NL West last year, but the Dodgers could be even better this season with star shortstop Corey Seager returning from Tommy John surgery and a dynamic duo of pitchers in Clayton Kershaw and Walker Buehler. Don’t forget, they’ve also got an excellent batting lineup that includes Cody Bellinger and everybody’s favorite redhead, Justin Turner.
Some are predicting the Braves will win the NL East – one of the busiest and most improved divisions in the league – again. We may or may not be in that camp. Last year, the Braves showed us that they’re definitely something to write home about, with a deep roster and up-and-coming talent in their farm system. They just signed former MVP Josh Donaldson, not to mention their lineup already includes Ozzie Albies, Freddie Freeman, and Ronald Acuña Jr, who might be the best player in the NL right now. If the Braves could just lock down one hell of a starting pitcher, they might be unstoppable! Well, at least in their division.
Fans are really feeling the Houston Astros. They’re the favorites to win the AL West this year and it’s not hard to see why with their loaded lineup and pitching rotation. The 2017 World Series champs have had two straight 100+ win seasons, and they’re just so damn likable as a team! Their batting lineup boasts players like José Altuve, Carlos Correa, George Springer, Alex Bregman, and the new addition of Michael Brantley. And on the mound, they’ve got Gerrit Cole and early Cy Young pick Justin Verlander, who struck out 290 players last season. Shortstop Carlos Correa might also be healthy this season. The Astros are just all around good! Let’s just hope no outfield snafus affect their chances at the World Series this year!
The St. Louis Cardinals… or the Milwaukee Brewers
The teams of the NL Central Division were in a super close race to the playoffs last season, particularly when you remember the Chicago Cubs were in there too! The Cards just missed the postseason last year, but MLB experts are picking them to win the division this season. Don’t sleep on the Brewers though, because they might have the most complete team in the NC Central. All of Milwaukee’s key players are back and they’ve got the new addition of Yasmani Grandal, one of the best offensive catchers in the league. The Cards might struggle with pitching depth, but they’re excited about picking up NL MVP-candidate Paul Goldschmidt, a pure hitter and stellar first baseman.
