You might know Shaquille O’Neal as one of the best NBA players in history, but he’s also a fun-seeker who loves a good party. During Miami Music Week last year, the crazy, carnival-style, one-night music festival known as Shaq’s Fun House came to life for the first time ever. Now Shaq is bringing it to Atlanta for Super Bowl 53 so that even more people can experience a wild party straight out of his imagination. Super Bowl parties get a reputation for being over-the-top affairs, and Shaq’s Fun House just might blow them all out of the water in 2019.
Where did the idea for Shaq’s Fun House Come From?
Shaq loves fun. If you look back over the years, the big guy has spent most of his time off the court in pursuit of a good time. He’s built epic treehouses, ridden zambonis at NHL games, and become the Carnival Chief Fun Officer for the cruise line’s commercials. He even bought a Krispy Kreme in Atlanta because, well, he could!
The three-time NBA MVP wants Shaq’s Fun House to be “the best event of all time.” (No pressure, right?) He’s bringing together two of everybody’s favorite things, music and sports, to create a massive party filled with circus performers, DJs, and the best music around.
So where’d he get this idea? Apparently, Shaq once snuck into TomorrowWorld, the EDM music festival just a short drive from his home base in Atlanta, and absolutely loved it. The fun-loving atmosphere of the crowd and the music totally inspired him. After it was over, Shaq even got the guys in charge to give him a set at its European counterpart, the TomorrowLand festival in Belgium.
Oh, you didn’t know Shaq is also, like, a pretty famous DJ? Turns out, he’s been spinning records just as long as he’s been playing ball. Now he DJs in different countries around the world in front of thousands of fans. Shaq loves the adrenaline of performing and making sure the crowd has fantastic time. He mixes dubstep, trap, and hip-hop and looks up to DJs like Skrillex and Steve Aoki.
Needless to say, he plans to invite the best of the best in artists and DJs to Shaq’s Fun House to make it an amazing concert as well as epic party. Shaq wants this event to feel as exciting as a “Game 7 of the NBA Finals” so he’s not doing anything halfway. He’s met with top music festival producers to create a physical manifestation of his idea of the perfect party. Because Shaq loves to party… and dance… and perform. If you make it to Shaq’s Fun House, expect to see this 7’1″ baller out on the dance floor or up on the stage rather than sipping champagne in the VIP area. If Miami was anything to go by, that is…
Shaq’s Fun House – Miami Music Week 2018
This was where Shaq began honing his party planning skills. Miami Music Week 2018 consists of six or seven days of EDM performances that more or less coincide with the famous Ultra Music Festival. The whole event attracts thousands of stellar performers and guests from around the world. In the midst of all that partying, Shaq’s Fun House was one of the most sought-after events of the whole week, even in its first year. Shaq chose a Miami warehouse location in Wynwood (kept secret until the last minute) where he created a magical, outdoor, carnival atmosphere filled with stages, performances, games, fire breathers, and guys on stilts. He invited a plethora of VIP celebs, friends, influencers, and regular folks over to party and filled the lineup with world famous DJs and top talent like Diplo, Steve Aoki, Carnage, Nervo, A-Trak, and Cheat Codes.
It was one of the most talked about parties of 2018’s Miami Music Week. According to ESPN, “Shaq’s Fun House was magical.” Vanity Fair said, “This is Shaq’s brain on fun.”
Shake Shack and Krispy Kreme (obviously) provided complimentary food at the exclusive event. Big brands like Lyft, Red Bull, Tito’s, Gold Bar Whiskey, Tanqueray, and Fiji helped sponsor the event and provide beverages at the bar. And there were even carnival games and a fantasy circus show… just to round out the whimsical vibe.
Celeb showed up too because, well, Shaq knows everybody. Gronk of the New England Patriots grabbed the most attention when he rolled up to the party (drinking water, apparently), took his shirt off, had a dance-off, and jumped on Shaq’s shoulders. The Denver Broncos’ Von Miller, designer Alexander Wang, and Shark Tank’s Daymond John made appearances too. Shaq told Jimmy Fallon that the party went on until 8 AM.
Just watch the video below to see a ridiculous recap of Shaq’s Fun House at Miami Music Week 2018. The thing is, Shaq says that you thought the Miami edition of his party was epic, just wait ’til the 2019 Super Bowl in Atlanta.
Okay, we’re convinced.
Shaq’s Fun House at Super Bowl 53: The Details
When and where?
Shaq’s Fun House is making its second-ever appearance on Saturday, February 1, 2019, the night before Super Bowl 53, from 9PM until 2AM. Shaq will be taking over Live! at The Battery, Atlanta, a sports and entertainment complex located at the Braves Stadium. He’ll be transforming it with ideas from his wildest imagination, which means oversized props, circus decor, festival-sized stages, and carnival attractions.
JBL is the presenting sponsor and they’re in charge of powering the main stage with massive pyrotechnics, CO2 blasts, and JBL Pro Audio speakers as part of their #DARETOLISTEN experience. Other sponsors will host brand activations ranging from social media photo booths and craft cocktail bars to virtual golf and other VR experiences.
Tell me more about this carnival and circus theme…
Of course. There will be carnival-style games for partygoers to try their luck and win prizes, plus a fantasy circus show vibe with professional (and interactive!) costumed performers. There’s even a Ferriss wheel. But we think the highlight will be a never-before-seen performance by Mystère by Cirque de Soleil. There’s even a dedicated Circus Sideshow stage – Shaq is going all out on this party!
What about the music?
Shaq’s bringing some of the biggest names in EDM and hip-hop. Shaq’s Fun House just released the lineup for the night and it’s incredible, with names like Diplo, Migos, Tiesto, Lil Jon, and T-Pain performing alongside Shaq (aka DJ Diesel) himself!
Shaq is also planning for some of the best chefs around to create delicious food and cocktails for the Fun House. Like everything else there, you can expect the options to be over the top. The Georgia-based Waffle House and iconic chain is opening a pop-up diner at the party complete with all the original decor and fan favorites. Shaq is also partnering with high-end steakhouse STK to make some gourmet dishes for his guests! There will also be a complimentary open bar, but if you’ve got more high-brow taste, consider splurging for the premium options. Just remember, guests must be 21 and older to attend.
I’m more of the VIP type…
For those who want to splash out, there’s a VIP section in Shaq’s Fun House too. Tickets start at $999. He’s inviting over 3,000 VIP guests to the party (way more than the 700 in Miami) and the mezzanine will be turned into a private VIP deck with a view of the stage and reserved seating, complete with bottle service obviously. Hakkasan, Omnia, and Wet Republic will be providing the premium nightlife offerings. Tables are also possible if you’re trying to ball out. They’re priced at $10,000 and up.
Shaq’s a big giver too. A portion of the proceeds from each ticket will go to fund afterschool music programs for underprivileged kids!
“I am so pumped to be taking my Fun House to Super Bowl Weekend. I am going to blend festival, carnival, and circus elements, and I promise you it will be the most FUN party of the year. I can not wait to see you all in Atlanta and perform alongside Diplo, Migos, Tiesto, and many more!” – Shaquille O’Neal
