This new musical is getting rave reviews and quickly becoming a fan favorite! Just released in November of last year, it’s the story of Broadway actors who venture to small-town Indiana to save a high school prom. Sounds a little lame, but stay with us here… The storyline is engaging and entertaining, the music is super catchy, and there are multiple storylines woven into the play. It all begins when a critic shuts down a Broadway show with one terrible review and then its actors head to the prom, combating homophobia in the heartland… and other contemporary issues. Of course, there are some touching moments and jazz hands along the way.

The Band’s Visit
This play won 10 Tony Awards – including Best Musical – so you might just have to go to see what all the fuss is about for yourself. While not as “feel good” as some of the others on this list, it is artsy and beautiful. Set in the slow-paced and isolated Israeli desert town of Bet Hatikva, local cafe owner Dina has given up on romance and spends most of her time daydreaming. Until an Egyptian band accidentally buys bus tickets to her town. When they show up lost, the locals take them in for the night. That’s when the characters begin to learn more about each other’s lives and the town starts to get a little more interesting!

This long-running comedy is based on the 2007 movie of the same name. The whole story is told from the point of view of Jenna, a small town waitress and expert pie maker who’s stuck in a dead-end marriage. A baking contest in another county offers her a chance at freedom. There are exciting songs, hilarious jokes (some are a bit sexual, FYI) and often a few guest stars in the cast – Sara Bareilles, Jason Mraz, and Katharine McPhee have all made appearances – so check to see if there’s anything special going on when you’re buying tickets!

To Kill a Mockingbird
Jeff Daniels is starring in this new play by Aaron Sorkin based on the Harper Lee classic, written over 50 years ago. You know Atticus Finch, Scout, and Boo Radley, but get ready to see them on stage. Watch as small town attorney Atticus fights for the rights (and life) of Tom Robinson, a black man accused of rape in the Jim Crow-era South. It was an incredibly ambitious undertaking to adapt such an iconic American novel, but the play opened to rave reviews and received nine Tony Award nominations. It just came out in December last year and there hasn’t been an empty seat at showtime since! Get your tickets now.

Pretty Woman – The Musical
Based on the famous Julia Roberts rom-com from 1990, it’s a modern-day Cinderella story… well, sorta. You know the plot: Businessman hires an escort for the weekend but it turns into much more than that as they get to know each other, he sends her on a shopping spree, brings her into his world, and all that. The play basically follows the film to a tee – even those quintessential hooker outfits! – but of course, there’s music too. It can be a little cheesy at times, but the actors and their chemistry is fab! If you liked the movie, definitely go see it!

There are plays that must be either acted very well, or not acted at all. Such is the “True West”, Sam Shepard's electrifying and visceral clot of all destructive energy. It is so masterfully layered that deserves the very best execution by truly brilliant actors. But when these actors are Ethan Hawke and Paul Dano you are sure to be mesmerized. As two conflicted brothers who loaf, love and rival each other, they take you to their spiral descent into self-destruction and keep you spellbound in the process. This is the moment when you understand why you continue coming to the theater. #truewestbroadway #roundabouttheatre #samshepard #broadway #newyorktheater
The newest musical on this list and the only one playing in Chicago, True West just opened in January this year. And Ethan Hawke is in it! The play is a revival of the Sam Sheppard classic from 1980 and it features two rival brothers, a mild one (Paul Dano) and a wild one (Hawke). It’s the violent and visceral yet funny story of how they fight it out over the measley remains of an inheritance amidst the death of the Old West. As an audience member, you begin to see how the repressed brother and the crazy brother have more in common than they thought… even as they attempt to kill each other.
