Founded in 1873, Vanderbilt is the one private institution in the Southeastern Conference. Education, law, nursing and medicine are prime schools at this university, and Vanderbilt instituted a strict honor code into its curriculum, further emphasizing its commitment to academic excellence. Notable alumni from the school includes former Vice President Al Gore, entertainer Dinah Shore and NFL quarterback Jay Cutler.
Even with Vanderbilt University's strong commitment to academics, this college still competes well in the SEC. The football team hosts opponents at Vanderbilt Stadium, and during basketball season opponents must contend with rabid fans and an odd schematic at Memorial Gym. This is Nashville, one of the hallowed grounds in the country for music, so it is no surprise there are plenty of great venues around campus to check out. The Grand Ole Opry House is a must stop for the country music fan, while Cannery Ballroom and Ryman Auditorium satisfy needs from every other genre of music.
