University of North Carolina

Established in 1789, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is the oldest public university in the United States. Located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, this university is the flagship school of the North Carolina collegiate system. UNC at Chapel Hill was one of the eight original universities to be classified as a Public Ivy, a classification which means the school is known for offering an Ivy League education for a public school price.

The North Carolina Tar Heels compete in the tough Atlantic Coast Conference, with basketball as the king of sports at the college. Through the 2009 season the Tar Heels have won five national championships in men's hoops and are a perennial favorite every year to do so. The UNC basketball team plays its games at the Dean Smith Center, named after its legendary coach of 39 years for the program. During football season the Tar Heels host their opponents at Kenan Stadium. There is plenty to do in Chapel Hill between sporting events. Check out venues such as the Arts Center of Carrboro, Cat's Cradle, Durham Performing Arts Center and Local 506 for any concerts or shows in the area.
