The University of Missouri-Columbia was established in 1839. Mizzou was the first public university west of the Mississippi. It holds an unique distinction of being one of a select few universities to have a college of law, veterinary medicine and medicine on the same campus. MU also possesses a very good journalism department which opened in 1908, the first such program in the world.
The Missouri Tigers have a rich tradition of excellence in athletics as well, competing in the tough Big 12 Conference. Come support MU at their home football games at Faurot Field and the basketball squad over at Mizzou Arena. Truman the Tiger, the Mizzou mascot, is sure to be there, named after President Harry Truman, the only U.S. President from Missouri. When not at a ballgame, there is still plenty to do in Columbia. Take in a concert or show at either the Blue Note or the Missouri Theatre.
