Founded in 1856, the University of Maryland, College Park is a public research facility located outside of Washington, D.C. The school's close proximity to our nation's capital gives Maryland plenty of resources to utilize for research, a great tool for the students. Notable alumni from this institution include newscaster Connie Chung, ESPN broadcaster Scott Van Pelt and CEO of cable network CNN Jim Walton.
The Maryland Terrapins battle in the tough Atlantic Coast Conference, playing their football games at Byrd Stadium. Once basketball season hits, a sport in recent years the university has done very well in, the Maryland Terrapins host their opponents at the Comcast Center. Maryland is right in the heart of a fabulous arts scene, so on days you would rather take in a concert or show, the 9:30 Club, Ford Theatre, Kennedy Center Concert Hall and Warner Theatre are fabulous options.
