Founded in 1798, the University of Louisville is a public school located in Louisville, Kentucky. Medicine is where U of L has really shined, as the university helped develop a vaccine against cervical cancer, developed the pap smear test, performed the first fully-contained artificial heat transplant and is credited with having one of the first blood banks.
Louisville competes in athletics in the Big East Conference. Recently the football team has become a national power, and the Louisville Cardinals play at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium. The basketball program won multiple national championships under Coach Denny Crum and remains a force today, playing their home games at revered Freedom Hall. In between sporting events, take in a concert or show over at Headliners, Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts and Louisville Palace.
