The University of Houston was founded in 1927 as Houston Junior College. For years this school competed on the Southwest Conference until the dissolution of that conference in 1996. Today the Houston Cougars compete in the West Division of Conference USA and have primarily enjoyed success over the years in basketball, including the seasons of “Phi Slama Jama” with basketball alumni and NBA stars Hakeen Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler. Houston is noteworthy for participating in the “Game of the Century” against the UCLA Bruins on January 20, 1968 at the Astrodome. This was the first regular season NCAA basketball game to be televised in prime time.
