The University of Florida opened in 1853. Located in Gainesville, Florida, this institution has been recognized as a Public Ivy, a distinction given for offering an Ivy League type education at a public school price. This college is a public land, sea and space grant research university, which notable alumni such as author Michael Connelly, current Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner and the NFL's number one running back all-time in terms of yardage, Emmitt Smith.
Playing in the tough SEC does not seem to bother the Florida Gators. Not only has Florida won multiple SEC titles in several sports, they are on quite a run in the 2000's for winning multiple national titles. Travel to Ben Hill Griffin Stadium during football season, then catch the Gators on the hardwood at Stephen C. O’Connell Center during hoops season. When not cheering on the Gators, catch a concert or show over at the Curtis M. Philips Center.
