Founded in 1870, the University of Akron is a public university located in Akron, Ohio. The Akron Zippers, or Zips as they are more commonly known as, compete in the Mid-American Conference. Regarded as a world leader in the field of polymer research, the University of Akron has such notable alumni as Ohio Congressman Thomas Sawyer, NFL linebacker and 2006 Defensive Player of the Year Jason Taylor, and retired MLB relief pitcher Mark Malaska, member of 2004 World series champion Boston Red Sox.
