Stanford University, officially named Leland Stanford Junior University, was opened in 1885 and is located in the Palo Alto region of California. Stanford was established by Governor Leland Stanford and his wife Jane as a memorial for their son. Stanford University is also private institution with ties to Stanford Business School, Stanford School of Medicine, Stanford Law School and Stanford School of Engineering. Players rush the field proudly wearing Cardinal red and white jerseys. Stanford Cardinal football kicked off in 1892, and fans can visit Stanford’s impressive Hall of Fame, which is located on campus.
The Cardinal takes on the competition in college football at Stanford Stadium. Every year the Cardinal meets up with the California Golden Bears for a colossal showdown coined “The Big Game”. The winners of this annual game are given the “Stanford Axe” as a trophy. The conclusion of The Big Game in 1982, simply called "The Play", is still considered one of the biggest plays of all-time.
The Cardinal is consistently competitive in basketball as well, so head over to Maples Pavilion for a Stanford basketball game. The Flint Center, the Fox Theatre and Shoreline Amphitheater are all great entertainment venues.
