Founded in 1917, Providence College is a Catholic university in Providence, Rhode Island. A small school in terms of numbers of students, Providence College is the one university in North America administered by the Dominican Order of Friars. Possessing strong programs in the liberal arts and sciences, this school is consistently ranked by the U.S. News and World Report as a top Regional College in the northeast.
The basketball program is the cornerstone of the Providence Friars athletic program. The Friars have advanced to the Final Four twice through the 2008 season, their last being in 1987 when a point guard by the name of Billy Donovan was the point guard for a coach by the name of Rick Pitino. Both gentleman later with different schools coached teams to national titles. Providence Friars basketball is played at the Dunkin Donuts Civic Center. When you are in the mood for some activity of the non-sports variety, the Providence Performing Arts and Twin Rivers Event Center are good venues for music and shows.
