WrestleMania History

WrestleMania is the biggest and longest running annual wrestling event in the history of professional wrestling. It’s regarded as "The Granddaddy of them all". WrestleMania is to pro wrestling as Super Bowl is to pro football, World Series is to pro baseball, Stanley Cup is to pro hockey and NBA finals is to pro basketball. Being in WrestleMania's main event is the highest point of a pro wrestler's career.

The WrestleMania dynasty began on March 31, 1985 at Madison Square Garden in New York. It was the WWF's…now known as the WWE after the World Wide Fund told Vince McMahon to Get The 'F' Out…first ever WrestleMania event, chronologically known as WrestleMania I.

WWE's WrestleMania would return to Madison Square Garden in1994 for WrestleMania X and 2004 for WrestleMania XX, celebrating the 10th and 20th anniversaries of WrestleMania. The slogan for WrestleMania XX was "Where It All Begins Again". A sellout crowd of 20,000 people from 16 countries and 48 states packed Madison Square Garden for WrestleMania XX.

WrestleMania’s return to Detroit in 2007 for WrestleMania 23 will mark the 20th anniversary of WrestleMania III at the Pontiac Silverdome. A record setting 93,173 fans attended the event at Michigan's Pontiac Silverdome. It was the largest indoor crowd for any live sporting event and largest paid crowd in pro wrestling history.

Wrestlemania Facts

Madison Square Garden and the Allstate Arena have hosted the most WrestleManias. Madison Square Garden in New York hosted WrestleMania I, X, XX. Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois hosted WrestleMania II, XIII, XXII.

WrestleMania IX at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada was the only WrestleMania to be held completely outside. WrestleMania XIX at Safeco Field in Seattle, Washington was partially outside because the retractable roof doesn't fully enclose the stadium.

WrestleMania VI and XVIII are the only WrestleManias to have been held outside of the United States. Both were held at the SkyDome, now known as Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
