11/25/13 – On a frigid night in Kansas City, Sporting KC won the Eastern Conference trophy with a 2-1 victory over Houston in front of a crowd of 21,650. The squads have met in the previous two MLS Cup Playoffs, but it was Houston that knocked out Sporting both seasons. Sporting Kansas City 2013 Season
Sporting Kansas City has secured a MLS Cup Playoffs
berth for the third straight season. The team clinched Saturday when Philadelphia and DC United tied. With two regular season games left, one at home against D.C. United, The Wiz will prepare for postseason play. It will be the twelfth time in franchise history that the club will compete for the Cup. Sporting KC is currently in second place in the Eastern Conference, one point behind the New York Red Bulls in the race for the Supporters’ Shield
Last season, the team finished first in the East but lost to the Houston Dynamo in the conference semis. The Kansas City roster included Graham Zusi who was named finalist for MLS MVP, Jimmy Nielsen, who was named MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, and Matt Besler who was named Defender of the Year.
Sporting Park in Kansas City played host to the 2013 MLS All-Star Game. The host team had the most representatives with three players voted in by the fans – Matt Besler, Aurélien Collin, and Graham Zusi.
