Seattle Sounders FC 2014 News and Updates

8/15/14 - Two games, two competitions, two wins – that pretty much sums up the week for Major League Soccer’s top club side, Seattle Sounders FC. First, the Sounders hosted Houston in an MLS match at CenturyLink Field, which saw the Sounders prevailing 2-0. The win over the Dynamo, head coach Sigi Schmid’s 200th as an MLS head coach in stints with Los Angeles and Columbus before taking the helm at Seattle, would also be costly in that striker Obafemi Martins was red-carded late in the game, meaning he will be suspended for the Sounders’ next league match. The other win, with Chicago providing surprisingly little resistance, was a 6-0 thrashing in a U.S. Open Cup semifinal. With that win, Seattle will advance to their fifth USOC final in six years of competing as a representative of MLS; their opponent will be Philadelphia on Sept. 16. But before that, the Sounders have a midweek match with San Jose, who invade CenturyLink on Aug. 20.

8/8/14 - It was an auspicious night – the opening of the spanking-new Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. But the night proved less so for Seattle Sounders F.C., who failed to find the back of the net in a 1-0 loss to San Jose. The loss was just the first time this season that the Sounders have lost more than once at a time, and means that head coach Sigi Schmid will have to wait until this weekend to try to pick up his 200th win. The Earthquakes collected the game-winner late in the first half, when Yannick Djalo got in behind the Sounders defense, catching goalkeeper Stefan Frei out of position, and tapped home. The Sounders created several solid chances to equalize in the last 10 minutes of the game but none were successful. Seattle hosts Houston this weekend.

7/28/14 - It is that point in the season when European clubs come to an increasingly soccer-hungry United States to face off in “friendly” exhibition matches against Major League Soccer clubs, which is how it came to pass that Seattle Sounders F.C. took on the English Premier League’s Tottenham Hotspur F.C. this past weekend. The Sounders and Spurs played to a 3-3 draw at a packed CenturyLink Field, the first time Seattle had ever gotten a positive result in a midseason friendly against a European club. The Sounders got goals from Gonzalo Pineda (penalty kick in the 33rd minute), Osvaldo Alonso, and Tristan Bowen, who each beat former U.S. national team (and one time Columbus Crew) goalkeeper Brad Friedel. The game kept the Western Conference leading Sounders in good form heading into this weekend’s tilt with Los Angeles.

7/18/14 - After defeating Cascadia rival Portland in a midweek matchup to knock the Timbers out of the U.S. Open Cup, Seattle Sounders F.C. took on the Timbers yet again, this time in a league match last weekend in Seattle, and once again, the Sounders were the victors, this time by a 2-0 count of their Western Conference rivals from Oregon. This match saw the return from World Cup national-team duty of forward Clint Dempsey, and the Sounders star did not disappoint, as he scored the first – and ultimately game-winning – goal of the game in the 74th minute. Dempsey would launch his initial shot, which was blocked by the Portland goalkeeper and rebounded to Dempsey’s teammate Obafemi Martins, who took a shot of his own. But Dempsey would get the second rebound and not be denied a second time. Marco Pappa would add an insurance goal in the 87th minute to account for the final scoreline. The Sounders have opened up a 10-point lead in the West over Salt Lake; their next league match is not until July 28 against Los Angeles, but this weekend they will face Dempsey’s old English Premier League squad, Tottenham Hotspur, in a friendly at CenturyLink Field.

7/14/14 - It’s been a Cascadia rivalry week for Seattle Sounders F.C., who dropped a league match last weekend in Vancouver, 1-0; then a few days later, were extended to extra time by Portland in a U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal match before prevailing 3-1. Against their northern rivals, the Sounders were held scoreless while the single goal of the game was scored in the 12th minute, when keeper Stefan Frei was beaten by a 30-yard long shot. However, against Portland, it was a different situation, as Seattle nearly had the game won before giving up an equalizing goal shortly before the end of regulation stoppage time. It took until the 111th minute before a former Timber, Kenny Cooper, flicked home a header that would serve as the go-ahead goal; Marco Pappa scored his second goal of the contest shortly thereafter to give the Sounders some insurance. This weekend will see Clint Dempsey return to the Sounders fold from national team duty as the team takes on Portland in a league match.

6/23/14 - It was Major League Soccer’s top club side against an XI from an amateur team from Tustin, Calif – and the result was one you might expect, even if Seattle Sounders FC did start a number of reserves. The Sounders blew away PSA Elite 5-0 in their U.S. Open Cup match, 5-0, to advance to the fifth round of the U.S.’s national cup tournament. It took the Sounders 23 minutes before they put their first tally on the scoreboard, when Aaron Kovar picked off a pass in PSA’s defensive end and ultimately was fouled in the penalty arfea, leading Brad Evans to convert the spot kick. Kenny Cooper had a brace (two goals) for the Sounders, who also got goals from Zach Scott and Sean Okoli to round out the scoring. Seattle will now face San Jose in their next Open Cup match, on June 24 again at the Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila, Wash.; just days later, they will fly across country to take on D.C. United, the Eastern Conference’s top side at the moment, at Washington, D.C.’s RFK Stadium on June 28.

6/9/14 - The points just keep on coming for Major League Soccer’s top team points-wise, Seattle Sounders FC. With their 3-2 win over Chicago this past weekend, the Sounders were the first MLS side to 10 wins, as well as the first to break 30 points (32) this season, putting them seven points clear of Western Conference second place side Real Salt Lake. Even without U.S. national team star Clint Dempsey, the Sounders got a pair of goals from Nigerian international Obafemi Martins, overlooked for his national team’s final roster. Martins struck first in the 31st minute, sending a cross from Brad Evans into the net to open the scoring, then converting a penalty kick in the 37th. However, Martins was shown a straight red card late in the first half after the visiting Fire had drawn back within one, putting both sides at 10 men. The Sounders are off until their first U.S. Open Cup match on June 18, against PSA Elite, a U.S. Amateur Soccer Association side from southern California, at the Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila, Wash.

5/27/14 - Rebounding strongly after a 5-0 shellacking received two weeks ago at New England, Seattle Sounders FC grabbed a much needed three points on May 17 with a 1-0 win over San Jose Earthquakes. The clean sheet registered by Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei was the first in nine games for the Sounders, who got a spectacular goal from Obafemi Martins. Martins, who was amazingly overlooked for selection by his Nigerian national team for the upcoming World Cup, ran down a pass from teammate Gonzalo Pineda, then after a bounce, sent the ball into the side netting for his fourth goal of the year. The Sounders will clearly be relying on Martins for the next few weeks, as leading scorer Clint Dempsey has been called up by the U.S. national squad for World Cup duty. The Sounders will head north of the border for their next game, to B.C. Place to take on Vancouver Whitecaps FC, the other of their Cascadia rivals.

5/16/14 - With a record of 7 wins, 1 draw, and 3 losses for 22 points, Seattle Sounders FC continue to set the leaguewide pace in the long march to the MLS Supporter’s Shield, two points ahead of Real Salt Lake for both the Western Conference lead and the Shield. Clint Dempsey has fallen into a tie for second place in the goal-scoring race, as New York Red Bulls’ Bradley Wright-Phillips scored a hat trick last weekend to slip past, and Chivas USA’s Erick Torres has pulled even. Teammate Obafemi Martins leads MLS in assists with six, one ahead of Brad Davis and Lloyd Sam. Next up on the pitch for the Sounders is West rival San Jose, at Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.

5/9/14 - With 10 games under their belt, Seattle Sounders FC are rapidly establishing themselves as the class of MLS in 2014. With 22 points, they are five points clear of West second place side FC Dallas in the race for the Supporter’s Shield, and eight points ahead of a logjam of four clubs atop the East with 14 points. Their goals for (22) and goal differential (+8) are well ahead of any other side in the league, and 12 of those goals are off the boots of two Sounders players – designated players Clint Dempsey (8 goals) and Obafemi Martins (4 goals). Lamar Neagle also has four goals to his credit, while Kenny Cooper has three and the two Chads – Marshall and Barrett – have a goal each. Martins also leads the league in assists with 6, making for a dangerous strike tandem with Dempsey ahead of the World Cup break.

Seattle Sounders FC 2014 Season

They’re loud, they’re proud, and they’ve turned themselves into one of the great fan bases in all of American soccer. And Seattle Sounders FC have mostly responded. Since joining MLS for the 2009 season, Sounders FC have won three US Open Cups (the first team in the MLS era to do so, and the first since 1967-69), qualified for the MLS playoffs every year, and advanced to the semifinals of CONCACAF Champions League in 2012. Seattle also made huge news at the 2013 summer transfer window, when they announced the acquisition of American international Clint Dempsey from Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur. Joining “Deuce” as Sounders FC designated players are Cuban midfielder Osvaldo Alonso and Nigerian forward Obafemi Martins. Seattle will be using a new goalkeeper this season, having acquired former Toronto FC keeper Stefan Frei.

2013 Season

10/22/13 - Although the Sounders are having trouble winning games of late, the team has secured a spot in the MLS Cup Playoffs thanks to a LA Galaxy draw. The two teams will play the final game of the regular season in Seattle opposite one another with just one point separating the two clubs. The Western Conference postseason field is essentially set and the Seattle Sounders are currently in fourth place.

3/15/13 - Seattle acquired forward Obafemi Martins today. It is possible that he will play in Saturday’s big rivalry game against Portland, the fifth most expensive match in the remainder of the 2013 MLS season.

In 2012, Seattle Sounders FC made it to the Conference Finals — further than the club had ever gone in the MLS Cup Playoffs. In 2013, the Sounders enter a transition year with numerous changes to the roster. Striker Fredy Montero was loaned to Colombian champions Millonarios; he was Seattle's all-time top scorer and their biggest offensive force on the field. Seattle is looking to acquire Levante forward Obafemi Martins to fill the gap and start alongside Eddie Johnson. In addition, Seattle added veteran defender Djimi Traore to the Sounders roster. Traore will bring leadership and experience to the team after years of playing in the top soccer leagues in Europe.

The Sounders recently won the 2013 Desert Diamond Cup, a preseason soccer tournament that featured the New England Revolution, New York Red Bulls, and Real Salt Lake. Sounders reserves beat Salt Lake to take home the trophy proving that Seattle has great depth. In addition, Seattle looks to have the best midfield in Major League Soccer, anchored by Osvaldo Alonso.

The Sounders play their home matches at CenturyLink field which is also home to the Seattle Seahawks. Seattle Sounders tickets average $48 this season which is just above the MLS average of $45. Big matches on the Sounders schedule include rival Portland Timbers (3/16, 8/25) and back-to-back MLS Cup Champions Los Angeles Galaxy (10/27). Timbers-Sounders FC tickets on August 25 are averaging $3 cheaper than Sounders game tickets for the March 16 matchup.
