Breeders Cup History

Wrapping up the thoroughbred racing season, the Breeders Cup World Championships got their start in 1984. Described as “the All-Star Game of thoroughbred racing,” the Breeders Cup race day consists of eight races – six on dirt, and two on turf, at various distances. These eight races (and sponsors) are:

• Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies: 1 1/16th mile, two year old fillies

• Bessemer Trust Breeders Cup Juvenile: 1 1/16th mile, two year old colts and geldings

• Emirates Airline Breeders Cup Filly and Mare Turf: 1 3/8th or 1 1/4 mile, three year old (and up) fillies and mares

• TVG Breeders Cup Sprint: Six furlongs, any horse three years old (and up)

• NetJets Breeders Cup Mile: Any horse three years old (and up)

• Emirates Airline Breeders Cup Distaff: 1 1/8th mile, three year old (and up) fillies and mares

• John Deere Breeders Cup Turf: 1 1/2 mile, any horse three years old (and up)

• Breeders Cup Classic (Powered by Dodge): 1 1/4 mile, any horse three years old (and up)

Breeders Cup Racetracks

Hollywood Park in Inglewood, California hosted the first Breeders Cup, and has played host two other times. New York’s Belmont Park has hosted the event four times, while Santa Anita and Gulfstream parks have hosted three Cups. The only Breeders Cup to be held outside the United States was the 1996 championships at Woodbine, outside Toronto, Ontario.

The 2006 Breeders Cup was held at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. It was the 6th time for Churchill Downs to hold the Breeders Cup, more than any other racetrack. The five previous times that Churchill Downs hosted the Breeders Cup thoroughbred horse race was in 1988, 1991, 1994, 1998, and 2000. The 2006 Breeders Cup World Championships at Churchill Downs was also the first time in the Breeders Cup 23-year history that it was televised.
