2014 Stanley Cup Playoffs Preview
4/15/14 - As of Sunday, the NHL's regular season officially closed and matchups for the 2014 Stanley Cup Playoffs were set. The new bracket format has divisional matchups taking place in the first two rounds, with wild cards (Columbus, Detroit, Minnesota, Dallas) being able to cross over regardless of division, and no reseeding of the 16 teams after each round. Over in the East: the underdog Red Wings are pitted against the Presidents' Trophy-winning Boston Bruins, the Tampa Bay Lightning (sans injured goaltender Ben Bishop) will take on the Montreal Canadiens, the Pittsburgh Penguins hope Kris Letang will bring back his offensive prowess to take down the Blue Jackets, and the Flyers will square off against bitter division rivals, the New York Rangers. On the Westside, the Ducks will take on the Dallas Stars who traded defenseman Stephane Robidas to Anaheim last year, the Colorado Avalanche (the west's Cinderella team) are up against the high-pressure Minnesota Wild, the Chicago Blackhawks are pitted against former Cup favorites (turned possible first round exit) St. Louis, and the Los Angeles Kings will take on the San Jose Sharks in what is the most highly anticipated series of the first round. Get your Stanley Cup Playoffs tickets and experience the most intense action all year!
4/8/14 - We're in the final fight for a playoff spot, so you'd think the NHL playoff picture would offer up a bit more clarity! As of today, the Boston Bruins have clinched the Eastern Conference, while the Penguins have taken the Metropolitan Division. Conversely, over in the West, division titles and the conference title are still up for grabs. Wild card contenders are Detroit and Columbus, with New Jersey, Toronto and Washington on the prowl in the East. Dallas and Minnesota lead in the West's Wild Card race, however, Phoenix and Nashville are close behind. If the playoffs started today, we'd see some great rivalries square off: (No. 2) Avalanche vs. (No. 3) Blackhawks, (No. 2) Sharks vs. (No. 3) Kings, (No. 3) Flyers vs. (No.2) Rangers, and Penguins vs. (WC) Red Wings. Here are some must-watch games this week: wild card berths are at stake with the Coyotes taking on the Blue Jackets tonight; Wednesday, the Sharks and Ducks face off to determine first place in the Pacific Division; Sunday, the Stars and Coyotes fight in what could be a winner-take-all scenario, with the victor stealing the final wild card spot in the West. With so much taking place in the final days of regular season, we can't even imagine the awesome action that will go down during the NHL Playoffs this year!
3/31/14 - The Western Conference race for the playoffs may not be as nail biting as the East, but you can bet tonight's match will be. The Minnesota Wild are taking on the Los Angeles Kings, and if the Wild come away victorious, they'll effectively extend the gap between themselves and Phoenix. The Ducks have the opportunity to stretch their division lead over San Jose and hone in on the conference lead held by St. Louis in tonight's game against Winnipeg. Over in the East, a couple teams missed some crucial opportunities, with Philadelphia and Washington failing to grasp precious points, while the Penguins clinched their eighth straight playoff berth. Tonight in New Jersey, the Devils are looking to stay alive against Florida, in a game that could essentially dash their playoff hopes in one blow. Teams are in do-or-die mode right now, which means NHL tickets are starting to go fast, lock yours in before the start of 2014's Stanley Cup Playoffs!
3/25/14 - Now is not the time to panic! That is, unless you're a Maple Leafs fan. Toronto lost their postseason padding when they dropped 5 straight, and are now fighting for the final wildcard spot in the East. Other teams know that solid Januaries or Februaries mean little in the postseason rush come March. Here are the teams keeping their cool: the Sharks clinched a playoff berth this Monday on the back of the second longest active postseason in the NHL, the Blues were the first to clinch in the West, and the Blackhawks will secure their own spot if they defeat the Stars tonight. Over in the East, Boston is the only team to have clinched a playoff berth, while the Rangers and Penguins are close. There are about 10 games left to go—get your NHL tickets now and see which teams will win postseason bids!
3/17/14 - Much like the NBA, the East is considerably weaker when held up to the West in the NHL, and it shows in the final month leading up to playoffs. Current club standing in the East leaves the Penguins and Bruins as the only two teams certain of their playoff contention—everyone else is a mini-slump away from losing it all. While no one is safe in the East, the most likely to stay relevant are the Canadiens and Lighting. The West is a bit more cut-and-dry: the Blues (best record in the league and best in the West), Ducks, Sharks, Blackhawks, Avalanche and Kings are essentially guaranteed their playoff spots. On the Western bubble we have the Wild, Stars and Coyotes competing for a postseason run.
With the NHL Playoffs just around the corner, now is the time to take note of the new format in the 2014 chase for the Stanley Cup. Following realignment (instead of 15 in each conference, there are 16 in the East and 14 in the West), the top three teams in each of the four divisions get playoff berths. The final four wildcard spots (two per conference) go to the teams with the most points outside of the top three —giving you a total of 16 contenders.
Wondering if those trade deadline moves pay off? Thomas Vanek to the Canadiens (scored a hat-trick to spoil Patrick Roy's return to Montreal), Marian Gaborik to the Kings and Ryan Miller to the Blues have certainly bolstered their club's standings. Get ready for a wild run in the playoffs, as teams are finally over their post-Olympic slump and gaining back the hard-hitting, bone-crushing momentum we always see in the NHL playoffs!
