Last season proved to be a miracle season for the Los Angeles Kings, who got hot at just the right time, snuck into the playoffs on the last night of the season as the eighth seed in the Western Conference, and then proceeded to blitz their way through the playoffs, going 16-4 while knocking off the top three seeds in the West — Vancouver, St. Louis, and Phoenix, in that order — before taking out New Jersey for the right to be the second California-based
NHL squad to hoist the Stanley Cup (after the 2006-07 Anaheim Ducks), while goaltender Jonathan Quick was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP.
Coming off the extended lockout, however, the Kings are struggling to find their way, as they are hovering near the bottom of the conference standings. Netminder Quick is struggling to keep the puck out of the net; while on offense, the lead players are centers Jeff Carter, Anze Kopitar (a fan favorite), and Mike Richards — who also leads the team in penalty minutes. Wings Dustin Brown and Kyle Clifford, and defenseman Slava Voynov have also made significant scoring contributions.
