1/22/15 - One of the largest and most competitive golf tournaments in the world is the Phoenix Open. This tournament is always featuring some of the top players in the nation, and there are rumors that Tiger Woods may play in this tournament this year. He’s one of the best golfers to ever play the game, and he’s going to make the golf tournament all the more meaningful. This year, there are going to be some celebrities playing in the pro-am portion of the tournament. Some of them this year include Hall Of Famer Randy Johnson, Bruce Arians, Larry Fitzgerald, Emmitt Smith, Urban Meyer and Tim Tebow. It should be a competitive, fun tournament for the fans. Held in early February, the Phoenix Open is the largest professional golf tournament on the PGA tour. Since 1987, “The Greatest Show on Grass” has called the Stadium Course at TPC of Scottsdale, home. The best-attended tournament draws a crowd of about 500,000 over the 4-day event who gather to watch the top golfers on tour including favorite Phil Mickelson, Scottsdale resident and 2013 Champion. In the first round of the Phoenix Open last year, Mickelson tied his career low round of 60 just missing the PGA Tour record of 59. The then 42-year veteran finished -28, matching Mark Calcavecchia in 2001 for the lowest 4-day score for the tournament.
The 2014 Phoenix Open field includes Brandt Snedeker who was the runner up last year, Bubba Watson, Nick Watney, Hunter Mahan (2010 Phoenix Open Champion), and Rickie Fowler. In addition Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama, who has five professional wins since turning pro in April, was an early commit. England’s Lee Westwood and Ireland’s Padraig Harrington also jumped on board for their chance at the 6.2M pocket. Other past champions in the field include Mark Wilson (2011) and J.B. Holmes (2006/2008).
2014 practice rounds begin January 27 and the tournament will conclude Super Bowl Sunday.
