West Virginia Mountaineers Football 2014 News and Updates

8/26/14 - Since moving to the Big XII conference for the 2012 season, the West Virginia Mountaineers have struggled to find the same levels of success they had while a longtime member of the Big East Conference. Head coach Dana Holgorsen took over the Mountaineers in the team’s last season in the Big East and led them to a 10-3 record and a shocking, blowout Orange Bowl win over Clemson, the last major bowl game the team has played. 2014 will see five of WVU’s six home games be played against conference opponents, including Oklahoma, Baylor, Texas Christian and Kansas State.

8/6/14 – Win. Trust. Finish. That’s the motto players and coaches from the West Virginia Mountaineers Football program are standing by in 2014. The team will soon have to focus on starting their campaign first, with their season opener slated to kick off Aug. 30 in Atlanta. The Mountaineers will get things going on an incline, beginning their 2014 schedule against the Alabama Crimson Tide. Alabama vs. West Virginia tickets have notably dropped in price in less than a fortnight: the get-in value two weeks ago was at $122, but now you can get into the Georgia Dome for as low as $88 on Saturday (8/30).

Now, the young buck is recovered from offseason shoulder surgery and will lead the team when West Virginia opens the season against Alabama. There are high expectations for West Virginia Mountaineers Football to succeed, with nowhere to go but up from last year's rock-bottom defense and habitually faulty offense. According to Holgorsen, the 2014 Mountaineers squad is the deepest and most complete team he’s had in his years of coaching at WVU, especially at running back. Projected quarterback Clint Trickett is at the front of the line for WVU”s options under center, even after offseason shoulder surgery. One back who is sure to make an impact is Daryl Worley; the sophomore proved to be a playmaker in the Gold and Blue Spring Game and has made significant improvements in the last two years. Mario Alford was the star of the evening, returning the opening kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown. Just four more months until the season takes off, find out who will get the starting quarterback role with WVU tickets today!

2/4/14 - The West Virginia Mountaineers ended last year’s roller coaster season with a 4-8 record (2-7 Big 12), characterized as a team struggling to replace spectacular talents Geno Smith, Stedman Bailey and Tavon Austin. The offense never recovered and the defense plummeted: WVU lost their final two games, which cost them a bowl appearance. The quarterback situation was looking brighter, though recently suffered a major setback: Ford Childress was suspended by head coach Dana Holgorsen for unknown reasons and Clint Trinkett is still rehabbing a torn labrum. The most notable Mountaineer to enter this year’s NFL Draft is RB Charles Sims, top pick from WVU and one of the top RB prospects in the nation. There are currently 14 commits, headed by four-star players QB William Crest, athlete Dravon Henry (No.11 athlete in the nation and a possible safety fit), RB Donte Thomas-Williams, WR Jacob McCrary and WR Lamar Parker. If WVU lands these key impact players, expect big things from the Mountaineers in 2014!

2013 Season

11/5/13- The West Virginia Mountaineers are 4-5 at this point in the season, and are coming up to a big game against the Texas Longhorns this Saturday; can the boys pull off an upset victory without giving up another early lead? Tickets are as low as $79 and as high as $340. Unfortunately the team has had to dismiss receiver Ronald Carswell after their last win over TCU for unspecified violations, but they are confident in their upcoming task: the Mountaineers need just two wins in the next three games for bowl eligibility. First up is Texas, then a road trip to Kansas and back home to face Iowa State. Not since 2001 has West Virginia not been part of a bowl game, watch them on the hunt for their 12th straight bid!

West Virginia Mountaineers Football 2014 Season

2013 Season

In the Mountaineers first year as a member of the Big 12 Conference, West Virginia had a disappointing season, finishing 7-6 and losing in the Pinstripe Bowl to Syracuse. With a difficult Big 12 schedule and many important playmakers departed, the Mountaineers will once again fight to reach bowl eligibility. Top quarterback Geno Smith and dynamic receiver Tavon Austin will now play on Sundays, so Coach Dana Holgorsen will be forced to adapt his high-powered offense to some new faces. Holgorsen also hopes that more experience will lead to an improved defense, which was one of the worst in the country last year. Average price for Mountaineers football tickets this season is $115, 33rd highest in the NCAA and sixth in the Big 12.
