South Carolina Gamecocks Football 2015 News and Updates

2014 Season

10/31/14 - After losing 45-42 to the Tennessee Volunteers (4-5, 1-4 SEC) on Nov. 1, the South Carolina Gamecocks football team (4-5, 2-5 SEC) must win two more games to be eligible for the bowl. During the battle against the Volunteers, Gamecocks receiver Pharoh Cooper was widely lauded for his finesse as he caught 11 passes and broke his school’s 2004 record with 233 yards receiving. The game was certainly a nail-biter at the end, a trend seen over the past few months. The team has been working hard to improve its defensive line during training. Next up, the team will play against the Florida Gators on Nov. 15 at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville, Fla. (tickets from $38). The following week will bring another home game against the South Alabama Jaguars on Nov. 22 (from $15) at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia.

The Gamecocks rebounded convincingly when they took down East Carolina and upset the not-so-mighty Georgia Bulldogs last weekend (35-38). 6/20/14 – Despite losing Jadeveon Clowney and Connor Shaw to the pros, the South Carolina Gamecocks returned the majority of their corps, and consequently boast one of the most experienced squads in the nation. CFB analyst Phil Steele put South Carolina at No.1 in experience and No.10 overall in his top 40 pre-season countdown. 5/27/14 – Will the Gamecocks win their first SEC title in 2014? The South Carolina football schedule at home features the team’s toughest opponents: Texas A&M (avg. $188), Georgia (avg. $304), and Missouri (avg. $184). All three games happen in the first half of the season so we’ll see early if the Gamecocks can complete another 11-win season. Palmetto Bowl tickets in Clemson are averaging $256, which is pricier than every game at Williams Brice Stadium except against the Bulldogs. Cheap non-conference Gamecocks tickets in Columbia are available vs. the East Carolina Pirates (avg. $119), Furman Paladins (avg. $87), and South Alabama Jaguars (avg. $82).

5/9/14 – Behind an offensive line loaded with future NFL talent, a group of explosive receivers, and running back Mike Davis, the Gamecocks led by fifth-year senior QB Dylan Thompson will surely be entertaining to watch this season! The 2014 campaign gets started with a bang against the Texas A&M Aggies at Williams Brice Stadium (avg. $220). South Carolina does get back their usual early season matchup with Georgia (avg. $314) and the meeting in Columbia is the most expensive game on the South Carolina Gamecocks schedule. 2/6/14 - The South Carolina Gamecocks were spectacular last year, finishing 11-2 (6-2 SEC) with a #6 ranking and Capital One Bowl victory over Wisconsin. Helping the squad get there was QB Connor Shaw, who battled injuries throughout the season, but still had an amazing senior year (24 TDs, 1 int). Along with three other juniors, South Carolina also sent off fan-favorite DE Jadeveon Clowney, with his hopes of being the No.1 player in the NFL Draft. The Gamecocks’ main focus this offseason was to land a recruiting class heavily laden with defensive talents, and they did just that. USC was one of the big winners on National Signing Day, signing 4-stars: Bryson Allen-Williams, Dexter Wideman, Dante Sawyer, Abu Lamin, DJ Smith Chris Lammons and Wesley Green to the line and secondary. With a top five finish last season, and such a promising recruiting class coming in, things are looking great for the Gamecocks this year!

2013 Season

11/1/13 – The Gamecocks came back from a 17-point deficit to beat No. 5 Missouri last Saturday, handing the Tigers their first loss of the season. It marked the team’s fifth win over a Top-5 SEC opponent in school history. South Carolina stays alive in the SEC East, currently in the No. 2 spot, one game behind Missouri. Four wins to finish the season would give South Carolina a legitimate shot in the SEC title game which would likely pit them against Alabama. South Carolina has not won a conference title since 1969 when they were members of the ACC, and haven’t played in the SEC Championship game since 2010. It was the same year that Spurrier and co. won their first-ever SEC East Division Championship. The Gamecocks will close the season at home against in-state rival No. 8 Clemson. South Carolina vs. Clemson tickets start at $146 for the 11/30 game at “The Cock Pit”.

2014 Season

Since Steve Spurrier, the Head Ball Coach, took over at South Caroina after three disastrous years coaching the NFL’s Washington Redskins, the Gamecocks have failed to go to a bowl game just once, and have recorded 11 wins in each of the last three seasons – all seasons in which South Carolina has gone to a prominent New Year’s Day bowl in Florida. In 2014, Spurrier will be replacing key players on both sides of the ball, while trying to stay competitive in the SEC’s East Division, and a home schedule that includes visits from Texas A&M, Georgia, Missouri and Tennessee.

2013 Season

Since taking the helm from Lou Holtz in 2005, Steve Spurrier — the famed “Head Ball Coach” — has sent the South Carolina Gamecocks football program to previously unprecedented heights, including a pair of 11-2 seasons in each of the last two years. Before Spurrier’s arrival, the Gamecocks had only three bowl appearances in their Southeastern Conference history, two of which were Outback Bowl wins over Ohio State Buckeyes Football; however, after Spurrier took the reins, the Gamecocks have failed to earn a bowl bid just once. What continues to evade the team, though, is an SEC conference title; only once have they played for the SEC Championship, in 2010.

South Carolina’s leading rusher, Marcus Lattimore, has moved on; while senior quarterback Connor Shaw did not take part in spring drills due to injuries. Whether Shaw or junior Dylan Thompson calls the signals, the primary receiver will be returning junior Bruce Ellington; also looking to gain significant playing time are a pair of additional junior receivers, Damiere Byrd and Nick Jones. Expected to step into Lattimore’s sizable shoes is sophomore tailback Mike Davis. On the defensive side, watch out for monster defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, as well as senior DE Chaz Sutton and senior corner Jimmy Legree. Can the Gamecocks wrest the SEC East away from perennial favorite and neighboring rival Georgia Bulldogs Football? Historic Williams Brice Stadium will be the place to find out in 2013.

In addition to must-see SEC games, the 2013 South Carolina football schedule features two non-conference games with the ACC's Clemson Tigers Football and North Carolina Tar Heels Football — the Gamecocks home opener on August 29th. Clemson vs. South Carolina tickets, SC's last home football game of the season, have a get-in price almost double that of UNC vs. South Carolina football tickets — $170 vs. $90 in the upper level. All four Gamecocks SEC home games in 2013 will be consecutive, with cheap South Carolina football tickets available under $80 versus Vanderbilt Commodores Football, Kentucky Wildcats Football, and Mississippi State Bulldogs Football. Florida vs. South Carolina tickets, however, start at $171 on November 16th. South Carolina Gamecocks home games against Florida Gators Football and Clemson are some of the most demanded SEC football tickets of the season.
