15 Heisman trophy winners have graced the gridiron at the Sugar Bowl, while 46 Hall of Fame coaches have called plays on the sideline; the Superdome has also hosted numerous BCS National Championship games in its 8-decade tenure. The latest championship (2012) showcased #2 Alabama utterly crushing #1 LSU, 21-0 for the crown; both Alabama and LSU have made the most Sugar appearances with 13 apiece. The most recent Sugar Bowl years have seen extremely close games, with an 18 point difference total in the last three matchups. Last year, #21 Louisville led a miraculous upset victory over favored #3 Florida Gators, and the prior year #13 Michigan Wolverines defeated #11 Virginia Tech Hokies.
In October of 2011, the newly renovated Mercedes-Benz Superdome was completed post-Hurricane Katrina.
