SEC Championship History

In 1991, the Southeastern Conference (SEC) took in two new members: the Arkansas Razorbacks left the Southwest Conference, while the South Carolina Gamecocks ended their independent status. This enlargement brought the membership to 12 schools and because of the enlarged size, the SEC found it necessary to split into a two-division alignment of six teams each.

In order to determine a conference champion, a football conference championship game was applied for and approved by the NCAA. The SEC Football Championship game was born, the first of its kind. That first game was in 1992, pitting the Florida Gators from the newly-created East Division against the Alabama Crimson Tide, representing the West.

Since that first season the competition has been fierce in the West Division, with five of the six schools making it to the SEC Championship – Ole Miss being the only one who has not yet made it, while three schools in the East Division – Florida, Tennessee, and Georgia – have dominated.

Overall, the Florida Gators have won seven titles in nine appearances. Next up would be the LSU Tigers with three wins in four tries. The Crimson Tide (six visits), Tennessee Volunteers (five trips total) and the Georgia Bulldogs (three visits) have each captured the title twice. Auburn has won once in three tries, while Arkansas (three trips) and Mississippi State (one time) are both seeking their first title.

Since 1994, Atlanta's Georgia Dome has been the site of the annual SEC Championship Game. The Georgia Dome has hosted all but the first two SEC Football Championship games. The first two SEC Championship games, in 1992 and 1993, were held at Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama.
