Orange Bowl History

Although it no longer is played in its namesake stadium, the FedEx Orange Bowl – the second oldest of college football’s bowls -- continues to be one of college football’s premier postseason bowl games; and as part of the Bowl Championship Series, has had opportunities in 2001 and 2005 to be the game that decides the national championship.

The Orange Bowl’s roots came from a pair of early Palm Festivals held in Miami in the middle 1930’s. The first Orange Bowl game was played in 1935, bringing together Bucknell to play the hometown Hurricanes from the University of Miami. Bucknell won that first matchup, 26-0, at a field ringed by temporary bleachers.

By 1938, the Orange Bowl stadium (initially named Roddy Burdine Stadium, after a local business leader) had been constructed, and Auburn defeated Michigan State 6-0 in the new facility. 1939 would bring the pairing of top-ranked Oklahoma to face second-ranked Tennessee; the Volunteers would hand the Sooners their only loss 17-0, in a game which would help to make the Orange Bowl become another desirable postseason destination.

Over the years the Orange Bowl became the destination for the conference champion of the old Big Eight (now the Big 12); Oklahoma leads the way with 18 total appearances, followed closely by Nebraska’s 17 visits. The Sooners also have the most Orange Bowl wins with 12, while Nebraska has nine; the Miami Hurricanes and Alabama have five each, and Penn State has four victories, most recently in the 2006 triple-overtime clash with Florida State.

In 1996 the game was moved to what is now Dolphin Stadium, although it returned to the Miami Orange Bowl stadium in 1999 due to a scheduling conflict with the NFL. Beginning this year, the Orange Bowl will be the home for the Atlantic Coast Conference’s football champion.

Orange Bowl & Dolphin Stadium Facts

The FedEx Orange Bowl is part of the BCS Championship Series that also consist of the Rose Bowl, Nokia Sugar Bowl and the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. Conferences with automatic berths include the Atlantic Coast, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-10 and the Southeastern Conferences. The Orange Bowl, along with the Sugar Bowl, Fiesta Bowl and the Rose Bowl, will rotate over the next five years in hosting the Team 1 vs. Team 2 national championship.

Dolphin Stadium has been known by other names including Joe Robbie Stadium, JRS, the Stadium Formerly Known as Joe Robbie, Pro Player Stadium and Dolphins Stadium. The 75,000 seat Dolphin Stadium has hosted the 2001 and 2005 Orange Bowl National Championship games. The 2007 FedEx Orange Bowl is the 9th Orange Bowl played at Dolphin Stadium since 1996.
