Fiesta Bowl History
The Tostitos Fiesta Bowl is always one of the most anticipated bowl games of the year, as it typically features two of the best teams across the country. Sponsored by Frito-Lay and started in 1971, the Fiesta Bowl hosted the Big 12 Champion as part of the BCS Championship series, before the implementation of the College Football Playoff in 2014. On Dec. 31, two at-large schools determined by the College Football Selection Committee, will descend upon Glendale in postseason frenzy. Hometown favorites, Arizona State, beat Florida State (45-38) in the very first Fiesta Bowl game in 1971. Since then, the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona has hosted some of the most unforgettable match ups in College Football history. The 13-person Selection Committee makes their choices based upon competitiveness and geography—which schools will duke it out in 2015?
Do you remember when De’Anthony Thomas’ epic 94-yard return set the tone for the 2013 game? The Oregon Ducks, led by redshirt freshman Marcus Mariota (Pac-12 Freshman Player of the Year) and head coach Chip Kelly (in his 4th and final year of coaching), dominated the Kansas State Wildcats 35-17. Last year, 16.5 point favorite Baylor, was defeated by Blake Bortles and UCF, 52-42. The Knights overcame the largest spread in BCS History, thought the title was broken a day later in the 2014 Sugar Bowl.
Now a member of the College Football Playoff, the Fiesta Bowl will host a semifinal game every three years, as part of the “New Year’s Six” rotation. The inaugural 2015 CFP has selected the Rose and Cotton Bowl to host the top four-ranked teams, while the Fiesta Bowl has scored a 2017 slot. The 2015 Fiesta Bowl will play out on New Years Eve, in a Dec. 31 triple-header, alongside the Peach and Orange Bowls. New Years Day will figure the Cotton, Rose and Sugar Bowls to determine the pair of teams to advance to the 2015 College Football Championship Game.
