Fiesta Bowl History

The Tostitos Fiesta Bowl is always one of the most anticipated bowl games of the year, as it typically features two of the best teams across the country: pitting the Big 12 Conference Champion against another at-large BCS team. The Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, sponsored by Frito-Lay, started in 1971 and has been a part of the BCS Championship series since 1998. Hometown favorites, Arizona State beat Florida State 45-38 in the very first Fiesta Bowl game in 1971. Since then, the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona has hosted some of the most unforgettable match ups of the Bowl Championship Series.

Last year, the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl was the only bowl game of the season to feature two top-10 ranked teams, other than the 2013 BCS National Championship Game, the Oregon Ducks versus Big 12 Champions, the Kansas State Wildcats. The game featured the most exciting punt return in Fiesta Bowl history when De’Anthony Thomas returned Anthony Cantele’s opening 59-yard kickoff for a whopping 94-yards, to score the first touchdown of the game. Thomas’ epic return set the tone for the rest of the game and the Oregon Ducks, led by redshirt freshman Marcus Mariota (Pac-12 Freshman Player of the Year) and head coach Chip Kelly (in his 4th and final year of coaching), dominated the Kansas State Wildcats 35-17.

A year prior, No.1 ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys went face to face against Andrew Luck and the Stanford Cardinals, both 11-1 teams. In what was one of the most thrilling games of the year, Oklahoma rallied in the fourth quarter after being behind the entire game, to finally push past Stanford with an overtime field goal, resulting in their 41-38 win.
