Big 12 Championship History

With the decline and dissolution of the Southwest Conference in the early and middle 1990s, four of the eight Texas-based members – Baylor, Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech – signed on with the then-Big Eight Conference, forming the Big 12 superconference.

Because of its enlarged size, the Big 12 found it necessary to split into six-team north and south divisions, and the need for a football conference championship game arose. That first Big 12 Championship game was in 1996, pitting the Texas Longhorns from the newly-created South Division against Nebraska, representing the North.

Overall, the competition has been dominated by three schools in each division: Colorado, Kansas State, and Nebraska from the North; and Oklahoma, Texas, and Texas A&M in the South. Oklahoma has won three Big 12 Championships in four appearances, while Nebraska has won twice in three appearances and Texas has two wins in four trips. The Aggies have one win and one loss, while K-State has one victory in three trips and Colorado is 1-for-4 in its visits.

The Big 12 Football Championship game has been held three previous times at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, with 2006 being the fourth visit.

The Alamodome in San Antonio will host its third conference championship in 2007; other previous venues have been Houston’s Reliant Stadium and St. Louis’s Edward Jones Dome (twice each); and Texas Stadium in Irving, Texas, outside Dallas.
