ACC Championship History

After adding three schools from the Big East – Virginia Tech, Miami of Florida, and Boston College – in the conference realignment merry-go-round of 2004-05, the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) established its own two-division alignment of six schools each, and received NCAA approval for a season-ending conference ACC Championship game.

Facing off in last year’s inaugural ACC Championship game were the Florida State Seminoles, representing the Atlantic Division versus the Virginia Tech Hokies of the Coastal Division. The ‘Noles prevailed, 27-22 at Alltel Stadium in Jacksonville, Florida; providing a thrilling climax to the ACC’s first season as a football superconference.

For 2006, the ACC Football Championship game returns to Jacksonville, to determine the conference’s top dog, and determine the ACC’s representative at the 2007 Orange Bowl (a new tie-in), and the 2006 Chick-fil-A Bowl.
