Michigan State Spartans Basketball 2014-2015 News and Updates

3/12/15 - The Michigan State Spartans basketball team entered the post season on a high note after beating Indiana 74-72 in their final regular season game. They ended the regular season ranked 3rd in the Big Ten, which gave them a bye until Session 5 on March 13, where they face the winner from the game between Ohio State and Minnesota. This season marks the fifth time they have entered the conference tournament ranked third, and the third year in a row. Spartans captain Travis Trice has stated he is looking to head to the post season in attack mode, as he and the rest of the team look to secure the conference championship and a good seed for the NCAA tournament. Tickets to Session 5 of the Big Ten tournament remain on sale, starting at $27.

3/6/15 - The Michigan State Spartans basketball team beat the Purdue Boilermakers 72-66 in their penultimate game in the regular NCAA basketball season. The game against Purdue was also Seniors Night for the Spartans, a special evening dedicated to honoring and saying goodbye to the departing seniors on the squad. Branden Dawson, Travis Trice, and Keenan Wetzel were honored in a special ceremony after the game ended. Trice had a memorable game to complement his farewell, scoring a game-high 27 points. The win, which is the seventh straight over Purdue, also brought Michigan State into a third place tie in the Big Ten rankings. The Spartans have one last regular season game on March 7 against the Indiana Hoosiers, with tickets starting at $118, before heading to the post season with a strong seed.

2/26/15 - Michigan State is one of the better teams in the Big Ten Conference, sporting a record of 19-9. Their last outing against Minnesota was thrilling, but they fell short of their goal. They ended up losing 96-90, but there is a lot to take away from this game. Denzel Valentine had one of his best games, scoring 27 points with 7 rebounds. He shot great from the perimeter. Despite his valiant efforts, the rest of the team couldn’t really get some momentum behind them. If they want to prevail in their next game, they need to strengthen their defense late in the fourth quarter. Up next for them is an exciting match up against Wisconsin, one of the better teams in college basketball right now. You can buy tickets now for $170.

2/19/15 - A win against the hated Wolverines is always good cause for celebration, and Tuesday’s road victory over Michigan was no exception. However, the Spartans still have work to do to achieve “lock” status for the NCAA tournament. With some disappointing early season losses to Duke, Kansas, Notre Dame, and a bad loss to Texas Southern, the Spartans have been trying to make up ground all season. While their current three game winning streak is a step in the right direction, the Spartans will have to capitalize on their remaining opportunities to impress the committee. Come out to the Breslin Events Center in East Lansing to support Michigan State Spartans Basketball for the two remaining home games of the season. Razorgator still has tickets available for the February 26th matchup against Minnesota and the March 4th visit from Purdue, starting at just $1.

2/11/15 - After a cathartic 68-44 victory over Big Ten cellar dweller Northwestern, the Spartans are sitting locked in a 5 team logjam in a tie for second place in the conference, behind the dominant Wisconsin Badgers. Senior guard Travis Trice led the Spartans with 16 points on a 5 of 11 shooting performance. With an upcoming home contest against the rival #23 Ohio State Buckeyes this coming Saturday, your Michigan State Spartans are in position to stake their claim as the #2 team in the conference. Come out to the Breslin Events Center this Saturday to see Coach Tom Izzo lead Michigan State Spartans Basketball to victory. Give your significant other the gift of Big Ten basketball this Valentine’s Day. Razorgator has tickets starting at just $33.

2/3/15 - One of the best teams in the Big Ten Conference right now is the Michigan State Spartans. Currently, they have a record of 15-7, and are playing well as a team. Their last game was against Michigan, their inner-state rivals. They ended up winning 77-66, scoring a lot of perimeter shots down the stretch. In their epic win, Denzel Valentine played stellar. He ended up scoring 25 points and had 7 assists with 7 rebounds. He had a complete performance, and he ended up getting on a hot streak near the end of the third quarter. They did enough in overtime to come away with the win, and their coach couldn’t be prouder. Their next game is against Illinois, and tickets can be purchased now for $30.

1/27/15 - This last Saturday, the Michigan State Spartans took on Nebraska, which was an extremely close game down to the very end. At the end of the day, Nebraska won 79-77. It was a hard-fought loss for Michigan State, but they should still keep their heads held high. Travis Trice had an exceptional game from the field, and he went on to score27 points with 5 rebounds. He simply couldn’t be stopped, and it was a breakout performance for him. However, their defense really struggled at containing Terran Petteway, who scored 32 points for Nebraska. They need to play better defense going forward if they want to turn their season around. Next up for them is a game against Rutgers, which takes place tomorrow January 27, 2015. Tickets can be bought for $3.

1/21/15 - The Michigan State Spartans basketball team were in for a challenge when they played the Maryland Terrapins , who are one of the highest ranked teams. They were unable to pull off a victory, but they played a great game. They also didn't let their loss slow them down as they won against the Penn State Nittany Lions a few days later. Brandon Dawson led with 12 points while Gavin Schilling and Denzel Valentine had 11 points. They got an early lead, but it was tied up with eight minutes remaining. It went back and forth with six answered points, but eventually the Spartans broke out and won it 60-66. They will be playing a couple away games next, but will return to take on the Michigan Wolverines on Feb. 1st. Tickets start at only $1.

1/12/15 - The Michigan State Spartans basketball team is still riding the high after their incredible and unexpected win against the Indiana Hoosiers last week. They very nearly lost their winning streak, however, when they returned to their home court to play the Northwestern Wildcats on Jan. 11th. Both team were matched through the entire game, both scoring 40 points in the first half and 32 in the second. It was not until overtime that the Spartans were able to pull ahead for a 77-84 win, bringing them to 12-5. Travis Trice led Michigan with 18 points, Denzel Valentine followed with 17, and Branden Dawson and Gavin Schilling each scored 13. The Spartans are leaving to play the Maryland Terrapins and then will return on Jan.21 when they play the Penn State Nittany Lions. Tickets start at only $1.

1/8/15 - Things did not look good for the Michigan State Spartans basketball team as they took on the Indiana Hoosiers on Jan. 5th. While Indiana had lost a few times recently, they had more wins and fewer losses than the Spartans and Michigan has lost two of their last three games. The Hoosiers were the favorite team, but they were in for a surprise when the Spartans started dominating. An intense first half saw the Spartans score more than twice their opponents and, while they did make a comeback near the end of the game, Michigan held a strong defense and ended the game 50-70. Now at 10-5, Michigan State's next home game is against the Northwestern Wildcats on Jan. 11th and tickets start at $3.

12/31/14 - After an intense game with the Maryland Terrapins, the Michigan State Spartans basketball team finds themselves with their fifth loss this season. They trailed by three initially, but they managed to catch up in a whirlwind second half, though it was not enough to overtake the Terrapins. Tied at 48, the two teams went into overtime and each came out with seven points. After a second overtime, Maryland edged out Michigan by two small points and the final score rested at 68-66. The Spartans are still doing alright, however, with 9-5, but they will be taking on the Indiana Hoosiers, on the 5th of January, with their impressive 10-3 win rate. That game promises to be exciting. Tickets are still available starting as low as $10.

12/25/14 - The Michigan State Spartans basketball team was able to turn things around after their winning streak was ended last game. When they played the Citadel Bulldogs on Monday, some thought their loss might be repeated after the first half ended with a close score. Despite only leading the Bulldogs by 6 points to start, the Spartan scored almost double their opponent's points in the second half to end the game with 56-82. Matt Costello, Marvin Clark Jr., and Gavin Schilling led their team with 13, 12, and 11 points respectively. Michigan has an excellent record this season, now 9-4, but they have a long way to go to catch up with Kentucky at the top. The Spartans will play the Maryland Terrapins on the 30th next. Tickets start at $20.

12/17/14 - Michigan State Spartans basketball is back on the winning track, with a win over the Oakland Golden Grizzlies on Sunday to make it two in a row. After a pair of losses by a combined six points, the Spartans have won their last two by a total of 59, improving their record to 7-3, tops in the Big Ten Conference. Junior guard Denzel Valentine led all scorers with 19 points, and Branden Dawson added 15 to go with six rebounds for Michigan State, who shot 55 percent from the floor, including a blistering 10-17 from behind the three-point line. Next up for the Spartans is an in-state clash with Eastern Michigan at the Breslin Center on Wednesday night, and you can still get great seats with Razorgator starting at just $1!

12/9/14 - Michigan State Spartans basketball got back on track Saturday, with a definitive 85-52 victory over the Arkansas Pine-Bluff Golden Lions. Tom Izzo’s squad put on a team basketball clinic, dishing 27 assists as a unit on the way to a 60 percent shooting night. Junior Matt Costello led the way for Michigan State with 15 points on 5-6 shooting, adding five rebounds and a steal in 19 minutes off the bench. Senior guard-forward Branden Dawson chipped in 12 and seven boards to go with four assists, and the Spartans improved to a Big Ten-best 6-3 record on the year. Next up, Michigan State will try to stay perfect at home as they host the Oakland Golden Grizzlies on Sunday. Razorgator is your ticket connection, with great seats for the game starting at just $1!

12/3/14 - The Spartans look to bounce back this weekend after losing their first road game of the season on Wednesday, a dramatic 79-78 overtime defeat at the hands of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Michigan State shot nearly 50 percent from the floor and 9-17 from three-point territory, as well as out-rebounding Notre Dame 43-26. However, the Irish went 20-25 from the free throw line and capitalized on the Spartans’ 12 turnovers to ultimately secure the narrow victory. After a pair of losses, Michigan State will have an opportunity to get back into the win column on Saturday, as they host the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions. Great seats are still available through Razorgator, starting at just $1 each! Come out to the Breslin Events Center and show your support for Michigan State Spartans basketball!

11/25/14 - After suffering a deflating early season loss to the hated Blue Devils, Coach Tom Izzo and his #19 Spartans are ready to rebound and refocus heading into the meat of their 2014-2015 college basketball season. With upcoming opportunities to redeem themselves against quality non conference opponents such as Eastern Michigan and Rider, the Spartans are ready to leave the loss to Duke behind and focus on preparing for their brutal Big Ten slate. Led by seniors Travis Trice and Branden Dawson, this Michigan State team is tough, experienced, and ready to capture the Big Ten title and secure a berth in the NCAA Tournament. With tickets to upcoming games starting at just $1 on Razorgator, there is no better time than now to come out to the Breslin Events Center to support Michigan State Spartans Basketball.

11/20/14 - The 18th ranked Michigan State Spartans edged the Navy Midshipmen in the Veteran’s Classic at Andover on Friday night, winning their season opener 64-59. Travis Trice led the Spartans with 25 points, a career high for the senior guard from Huber Heights, Ohio. The Midshipmen, despite a big height disadvantage, refused to go away, forcing 15 Michigan State turnovers while committing only 10. Trice’s play in the last 2 minutes, including three free throws in the final 18 seconds, pushed the Spartans to victory. Some of this season’s upcoming highlight games include Big Ten Conference top 25 rivals Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio State and Nebraska, as well as tip-offs against such tradition-rich programs as Kentucky, Indiana, and Notre Dame. No matter the opponent, Michigan State basketball is always a great time-check out the schedule and buy your tickets now to cheer on the nationally ranked Spartans!

11/12/14 - The Michigan State Spartans Basketball team will have their first game of the season on Friday against the Navy Midshipmen. The Spartans recently recruited shooting guard Matt McQuaid and wing Kyle Ahrens, standing at 6’5” and 6’4” respectively. However 6’9” Deyonta Davis is the biggest addition, both in height and prospect. Michigan State has put together a really good team this year and a lot of polls are putting them high in the brackets. The Spartans have a season mostly full of away games coming up, so be sure to take advantage of the home games on Friday the 21st against the Loyola Chicago Ramblers and on Monday the 24th against the Santa Clara Broncos. Tickets are available for both games starting at only $1.

2013-2014 Season

2/7/14 – Good news Spartans! After sitting out a full month, Adreian Payne (foot) was back on the court last night leading MSU to an 82-67 win over Penn State. The Spartans will be tested again however, as point guard Keith Appling is dealing with a sprained right wrist. The Spartans have played without a star Senior before, looking to their younger players to step up, but Michigan State just cannot get a break. Arguably the most dangerous team in the Country when their roster is healthy, Tom Izzo’s squad will look to recover by March and head into the Big Ten tournament at full strength. Support the Spartans on their road to the Final Four; with four games left in East Lansing, MSU fans can catch the action for $40 or less to every home matchup remaining.

1/3/14 - Michigan State boasts one of the best athletic departments in the nation: Spartans football crowned Big Ten champs and this year’s Rose Bowl game winners, while their basketball team is currently 2nd in the B1G, with a near-flawless 12-1 record thanks to "The Izzo Factor" heading deeper into conference play. Michigan State opened up their B1G season on New Years Eve with a win over Penn State, 79-63. At No. 5 in the nation, the Spartans are on their way to their eighth title banner, though the team is pretty banged up. Still, with Adreian Payne, Gary Harris and Matt Costello succumbing to sickness and injury this season, Michigan State nonetheless managed to remain in the top five in the nation. When these players get back to full form this year, the well rounded Spartans will be an overwhelming force for any opponent to grapple with. Michigan State Spartans tickets start at $43 when they host rivals, the Ohio State Buckeyes on January 7. Gear up for the ultimate B1G pandemonium as the Spartans plan to score their school another victory banner this year!

Championship-caliber ball is expected from Michigan State, who has been led for nearly two decades by coach Tom Izzo, the four time national coach of the year that has brought the Spartans to the NCAA Tournament 16 consecutive times. Last year, Michigan’s post season run was cut short by Duke in the Sweet 16, but this year, the squad is poised to enter the Final 4 with all but one of their stellar players returning. In fact, during Izzo’s tenure, every senior year player has made it into the Final 4 at least once.

MSU will start what is expected to be a tough schedule on Nov 8 when they host McNeese State at the Breslin Events Center. They will move onto the Champions Classic versus Kentucky (Nov 12) and the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic beginning Nov 15. On December 4, MSU will host No. 12 North Carolina at Breslin Events Center in one of the top non-conference games this season. The Spartan’s Big Ten conference games kick off on December 31 at Penn State and closes March 9 at Ohio State. They will play 7 Big Ten teams twice, and once against Nebraska, Minnesota, Purdue and Wisconsin.

The #2 ranked team of preseason (Coaches Poll) features Gary Harris, premier shooter in the nation, and Keith Appling, defensive star—a duo that produce an impressive 26 points a game. Senior Adreian Payne, possible player of the year recipient, will bring the heat with immensely athletic Branden Dawson at his side. The Spartans also boast a talented bench, averaging 15 points per game last season that is sure to give even more this time around.
