Georgetown Hoyas Basketball 2013 News and Updates
10/25/13 - The storied Georgetown Hoyas are in for an exciting season, picked #2 in the Big East by the Coaches poll, just behind Marquette
. Last season, spearheaded by coach John Thompson III, the Hoyas were the top overall seed for the Big East Tournament
and finished #2 seeds in the NCAA Tournament
, ultimately upset by Florida Gulf Coast. The Hoyas are hoping to brush off their post-season blues, being eliminated for five consecutive years by double-digit seeds, eyeing the Big East title with an optimistic and seasoned squad.
JT3 and company will kick off their season tonight, at the annual Basketball Tip-Off Party, featuring artist B.o.B. The Hoya’s opening game will take place overseas against the Oregon Ducks
at Camp Humphreys in South Korea for the Armed Forces Classic on Nov 8, in support of active duty military members. The Blue and Gray were chosen to play Michigan State
in “Super Saturday Hoops” at Madison Square Garden
, as part of Super Bowl weekend (Feb 1). G-Town’s Big East conference play will begin on New Year’s Eve when the Hoyas host rivals DePaul
, and a couple days later, St. John’s
, at Verizon Center
in the nation’s capital (Jan 4).
The Hoyas must fill the hole left by Big East Player of the Year, Otto Porter Jr. to the Washington Wizards
, a job shouldered by senior guard and captain, Markel Starks. Starks was one of five players chosen to represent the Big East in the All- First Team during preseason, averaging 12.8 points a game. Joining the team is redshirt junior and UCLA
transfer, Joshua Smith, a Pac- 12 All-Freshman in 2011, who will not have to sit out this season after being granted a Seasons of Competition waiver.
