Sacramento Kings 2014 News and Updates

4/10/14 - Their top two scorers (with 24 points apiece), DeMarcus Cousins and Travis Outlaw, outscored their opponent’s top two scorers (23 points each). They kept the league’s leading scorer from extending his string of games with 25 points or more. Yes, even though the Sacramento Kings broke Kevin Durant’s streak, holding him to 23 points (along with Caron Butler), they couldn’t keep Oklahoma City completely down, falling 107-92 at Sleep Train Arena on April 8. Cousins added 14 rebounds for a double-double on the night, along with two steals, two blocks and an assist; Outlaw contributed five boards and four assists on the night. The Kings got just 15 points from a total of three players on their bench.

4/2/14 - The Sacramento Kings leveraged a 47-30 advantage on the night in rebounding – including a 15-7 domination on the offensive glass – to grab a road victory in New Orleans, 102-97 over the Pelicans this past weekend. Nearly all of the Kings’ scoring was done by four starters; center DeMarcus Cousins was the star of the night with 35 points, 14 rebounds, three assists, two blocks and a steal. Rudy Gay and Ray McCallum each tossed in 22 points; with McCallum’s 10 dishes giving him his own double-double and Gay adding five boards and another five assists. Reggie Evans’s offensive contributions were minimal (three points) but chalked up a dozen rebounds. The Kings’ bench contributed just six points on the night.

3/26/14 - Despite a rough fourth quarter, the Sacramento Kings used a pair of 30-point performances, from DeMarcus Cousins and Isaiah Thomas, to overwhelm the visiting Milwaukee Bucks 124-107 last weekend. Cousins, who had a double-double of 32 points and 12 rebounds; and Thomas, who contributed 30 points and eight rebounds, were joined at the double-figure scoring level by Rudy Gay, who added 24 points and eight rebounds, and Ben McLemore, with 15 points. The only starter not in double figure scoring, Reggie Lewis – who had just six points – made his presence known under the glass, joining Cousins in double-figure rebounding with 10.

3/19/14 - The Sacramento Kings returned home to Sleep Train Arena on March 18, and it turned out to be a case of home, sweet home for the Kings, who defeated Washington in overtime 117-111, ending a two game slide. The Kings got a total of 72 points from a trio of players – 24 points each from Rudy Gay, DeMarcus Cousins, and Isaiah Thomas. Thomas had the best gamed all around of the three, his 11 rebounds and 10 assists making for a triple-double on the night; while Cousins’ 14 boards would give him a double-double. Gay added six rebounds and three steals.

3/13/14 - After starting their East and Midwest road trip on a positive note with a win in Milwaukee, the Sacramento Kings proceeded to drop three straight contests, first to East playoff teams Toronto and Brooklyn, and most recently Detroit, who sit ninth in the East, just outside the playoffs. Despite the 99-89 loss, center DeMarcus Cousins had a monster game especially on defense, combining 13 points with 14 rebounds (11 defensive) and six blocked shots; Rudy Gay provided a team high 20 points in the losing effort.

3/6/14 - After dropping three straight, the Sacramento Kings collected a much needed win at home on March 3, defeating New Orleans 96-89. Four of the Kings’ five starters scored in double figures, led by DeMarcus Cousins’ 23 points and Isaiah Thomas’s 22; Cousins also cleared 12 rebounds for the Kings, while forward Reggie Evans had 13 rebounds. Cousins, however, will have to play carefully going forward, as he has 15 technical fouls on the season; his next T will lead to a one-game suspension, with additional suspensions and fines coming after every pair of technicals after that.

2/27/14 - Oof. The Sacramento Kings suffered their worst loss of the season earlier this week, with visiting Houston victorious by a 129-103 count. Even so, five Kings scored in double figures, led by forward Rudy Gay with 25 points; bug man DeMarcus Cousinschipped in 16 points and six boards, while Ben McLemore added 15 points and four steals.. Off the court, the Kings successfully negotiated a buyout of popular guard Jimmer Fredette, the 2011 college basketball player of the year at Brigham Young. League sources say that several teams will have interest in Fredette once he clears waivers.

2/20/14 - In the days leading up to the February 20 league trade deadline, the Sacramento Kings made a pair of important moves; acquiring Jason Terry and Reggie Evans from Brooklyn in exchange for Marcus Thornton, and sending a second-round draft pick to Miami for Roger Mason Jr. and cash. However, it has been reported that the Kings then waived Mason after acquiring him. On the court, the Kings dropped their third game this season to Golden State, 101-92. Despite a wrist injury, Kings guard Isaiah Thomas led all scorers with 26 points, and also collected seven assists for the Kings.

2/7/14 - After not being able to hold on to a win against Indiana, the Sacramento Kings found themselves in a similar situation against Toronto; having to keep the Raptors at bay despite a furious Toronto scoring rush in the fourth quarter. Unlike against the Pacers, though, the Kings were able to hold on for the win, 109-101, despite leading by as many as 22 points earlier in the game. “We make it interesting,” Kings coach Michael Malone told the Sacramento Bee newspaper afterwards. Rudy Gay struck his former team for 24 points and 10 rebounds to lead the way for the Kings.

1/31/14 - First renderings were recently released by the Sacramento Kings of the new Downtown Plaza arena the team hopes to be playing in come the 2016 season. The arena design borrows elements from other highly acclaimed venues around the league, including the recently opened Barclays Center in Brooklyn, and Indiana’s Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The Kings have been working for several years to replace the suburban Sleep Train Arena; ESPN reported that construction on the new facility is slated to begin in summer.

2012-2013 Season

3/8/13 - Perhaps the most talked about topic for the Sacramento Kings this year is their potential move to Seattle. Come mid-April fans should have a better idea of whether or not they'll need to clear their calendars for the 2013-2014 season at Sleep Train Arena. As the Kings finish up regular season play, their focus may be more on the NBA Draft than the NBA Playoffs. With Isaiah Thomas, Tyreke Evans, and DeMarcus Cousins, the franchise has some young talent to build on and they will look to do so in the lottery this year.

The Kings have not played well on the road this season and yet Sacramento Kings tickets to their away games are averaging about 30% more than tickets at home. Kings tickets at home are averaging $60, about half the price of the League average of $116. All but three games this season at Sleep Train Arena are averaging under $100 including upcoming matchups on the Sacramento Kings schedule: Los Angeles Clippers (3/19) and Philadelphia 76ers (3/24). Golden State Warriors tickets between the two Nor Cal teams averaged just $39 (12/19) and $61 (11/5) - the Kings won both those games. The Sacramento Kings owners offer cheap Kings tickets throughout the season. Get-in prices were as low as $2 for matchups early in the season against the Minnesota Timberwolves (11/27) and Toronto Raptors (12/5). Should the Kings move to Seattle, what do you think the average cost of Super Sonics tickets will be?

Sacramento Kings 2013-2014 Season

The Sacramento Kings are 1-5 on the season, losing every game since their season opening win over the Nuggets. First-year coach Mike Malone endeavors for more effort from a lot of his players who he feels are "guys [that] just care about themselves on this team.” As a result, he will be making some major changes in the lineup before Wednesday’s game against the Brooklyn Nets. The Kings are on a long home stretch for the majority of November, with plenty of chances to utilize home court advantage and put some numbers in the win column. An exciting upcoming game will commence Friday Nov 15, when the Pistons visit the Kings for a frontcourt face off between DeMarcus Cousins and Greg Monroe. At this point, Sacramento is desperate to avoid breaking the franchise record for worst start of a season: 1-7 in the early 90s. Cheer on the team at Sleep Train Arena and help rally the season!

After the sale of the Kings to Northern California businessman Vivek Ranadive, the team will officially be staying in Sacramento. With new ownership and front office personnel, the Kings look to rebuild under first-year coach Mike Malone. Replacing longtime Kings point guard and former #1 pick Tyreke Evans is promising rookie and former Kansas Jayhawk Ben McLemore. Evans makes his first return to Sacramento as a member of the New Orleans Pelicans on 12/23.
