Orlando Magic 2014 News and Updates

4/10/14 - The Orlando Magic had to make do without big man Nikola Vucevic when they took on Minnesota last weekend. No worries, though, as Arron Afflalo and his Magic teammates stepped up to deliver a 100-92 defeat to the Timberwolves at the Amway Center. Afflalo racked up 18 points to lead the Magic’s scoring attack, while starter Maurice Harkless and reserve Tobias Harris were close behind, each adding 17 points. Kyle O’Quinn recorded a double-double, scoring 14 points and pulling down 13 boards, along with four blocked shots on the night; while Jameer Nelson’s offensive contribution was minimal (two points on 1-of-6 from the field), he made his presence known with 12 assists and a pair of steals.

4/2/14 - They shot 55.1% from the field, held a 13-2 advantage in fast break points and 42-38 on points in the paint, to go along with a 33-30 rebounding advantage. Despite all this, the Orlando Magic couldn’t convert their statistical advantages into a victory, dropping a 98-93 loss to visiting Toronto on March 30. Center Nikola Vucevic garnered a double-double for the Magic, combining 22 points and 10 boards with four assists, two rejections and a steal; starting point guard Jameer Nelson and reserve shooting guard Victor Oladipo each added 16 points,

while starting small forward Maurice Harkless and backup small forward Tobias Harris each chalked up 14 points for the Magic.

3/26/14 - The Orlando Magic used big nights from big man Nikola Vucevic and reserve forward Tobias Harris to snap a nine-game losing streak and defeat the visiting Portland Trail Blazers, 95-85, on March 25. Both Harris (25 points, 11 rebounds) and Vucevic (22 points, 10 rebounds) rang up double-doubles in the win, while Victor Oladipo added 13 points, and Doron Lamb was 3 of 4 from beyond the three point arc – all of his attempts from the field – as part of an 11 point contribution. Oladipo also dished out a half dozen assists, along with three steals. The Magic used a decisive 16 point run in the second quarter to hold off the visiting Blazers.

3/19/14 - At six straight, the Orlando Magic have a ways to go before their losing streak approaches Philadelphia’s epic depths, but the Magic have lost to teams as diverse as Milwaukee and Denver on one hand, and San Antonio and Golden State on the other. Despite the loss, the Magic had five players – three starters and a pair of reserves – in double-digit scoring, led by Nikola Vucevic’s 15 and Tobias Harris’s 14 off the bench. Harris also had six boards, while four players – Vucevic, Kyle O’Quinn, Victor Oladipo, and Doron Lamb – each pulled down five rebounds.

3/13/14 - Seven players scored in double figures, including all five starters…but despite the balance, the Orlando Magic dropped their third straight contest since defeating Philadelphia last weekend, losing on the road to Milwaukee 105-98 on March 10. Maurice Harkless had 14 points; Jameer Nelson 13; the trio of Nikola Vucevic, Arron Afflalo, and Victor Oladipo coniing off the bench all chipped in 1ith 12 points each; Tobias Harris also came in as a reserve and put up 11 points; and Kyle O’Quinn had 10 points. Vucevic had a double-double as well, pulling down 12 rebounds.

3/6/14 - In their last five games, the Orlando Magic have had just a pair of wins, both coming against free-falling Philadelphia. The Magic’s most recent victory, 92-81, was powered by forward Tobias Harris’s 31 point explosion, and Nikola Vucevik’s 17 boards (14 defensive rebounds) and pair of blocked shots to go along with 18 points. Even still, the Magic managed to connect on only a single three-pointer, by Maurice Harkless; however Harkless swatted away three shots on the defensive end. Off the court, leading scorer Arron Afflalo has been out for several games, but was expected to be back for the March 5 game against Houston. Jameer Nelson continues to be day to day with a sore calf muscle.

2/27/14 - Washington, D.C. was not a friendly place for the Orlando Magic, who lost their 16th straight road game earlier this week, 115-106 to the Wizards at the Verizon Center. In the loss, several players had strong performances, these included center Nikola Vucevic, who collected a double-double of 19 points and 14 rebounds; guard Victor Oladipo, who contributed 26 points (team high) and five assists, and forward Maurice Harkness, added 22 points. Point guard Jameer Nelson had an off night in scoring, failing to reach double digits with just seven points, but dished out a team high eight assists.

2/20/14 - Despite a handful of rumors, the Orlando Magic made no moves at the NBA trade deadline on February 20. The Magic are also struggling on the court, having lost three straight including their forst two contests coming out of the All Star break. The most recent losses have come to Central Division minnows Milwaukee (104-100) and Cleveland (101-93). Guard Arron Afflalo continues to step up despite the losses, collecting a team high 21 points against Milwaukee while leading all scorers with 23 against Cleveland.

2/7/14 - After taking a 112-98 win over Detroit, the Orlando Magic must gear up to face the two best teams in the NBA, Oklahoma City and Indiana, at Amway Center over the course of three days. Leading the charge for the Magic will be their two representatives at the league’s All Star festivities in New Orleans – Arron Afflalo, who will be in the three point shooting contest; and Victor Oladipo, who is slated to be part of the NBA Skills Challenge, featuring dribbling, passing and shooting stations.

1/31/14 - The Orlando Magic’s starting center, Nikola Vucevik, was recently cleared by the team’s medical staff after a 12 day injury layoff, and was in the lineup for consecutive games as the Magic took on Toronto and fellow cellar-dwellers Milwaukee. Team officials advise that while he is not under any strict playing limits after his concussion, he will need a few games to return to his usual workload. The Swiss 7-foot center is leading the team in rebounding per game as well as blocked shots.

1/20/14 - The Orlando Magic may have finally turned the corner in their quest to rebound from their upsetting season last year. The Magic stopped their atrocious 10-game losing streak with their first victory of 2014: a 93-91 win over the Boston Celtics on Sunday night. Arron Afflalo had 20 points and tied a career-high 13 rebounds while the squad squashed Rajon Rondo’s second game back from injury. The Magic still find themselves at 11-30, sitting last in the Southeast Division and second-to-worst in the Eastern Conference, just above Milwaukee. Orlando will try to ride the rhythm this Tuesday against the Brooklyn Nets, followed up by a home-court match against division opponents, the Atlanta Hawks Jan 22. Orlando Magic tickets for their next home game are a cheap $13 on Wednesday, likewise Friday’s game in Florida against the Los Angeles Lakers are just a $16 minimum. Support the Magic as they surge back into play after their momentous win last week!

Orlando Magic 2013-2014 Season

Entering the 2012-13 season, the Magic had the 18th most expensive tickets in the NBA. When their 2013-14 home schedule begins on 11/1 against the New Orleans Pelicans, expect prices to rank closer to the bottom of the league. The most expensive game at the Amway Center this upcoming season is the 1/4 matchup against the defending champion Miami Heat. The Los Angeles Lakers, also spurned by Dwight Howard, make their annual trip to Orlando on 1/24 in the second most expensive Magic home game. Howard’s return to Orlando as a member of the Houston Rockets on 3/5 is the fourth most expensive home game.

The Magic are still in rebuilding mode following summer 2012 trade of Dwight Howard. After a 2012-13 campaign that saw the team finish last in the Eastern Conference, there is nowhere to go but up. With a mix of young, promising players as well as seasoned veterans, there is optimism. The Magic return their backcourt of leading scorer Arron Afflalo and longtime point guard Jameer Nelson, who is entering his tenth season with the team. Leading rebounder Nikola Vucevic and frontcourt mates Glen Davis and Hedo Tukoglu also return. Rookie #2 overall draft pick Victor Oladipo is expected to make an instant impact. The Indiana product is an explosive athlete with a great motor, and enters the season as a favorite for Rookie of the Year.
