Boston Celtics 2014 News and Updates
3/7/14 - The Boston Bruins played one of their best games of the year last night shutting out the Washington Capitals behind Tuukka Rask’s strong play in net who recorded his league leading sixth shutout of the season. The Bruins were able to get offense from a multitude of areas having three different players record a goal with Brad Marchand putting the dagger in the Capitals by scoring the final goal of the game with just a minute and a half left in the game.
3/6/14 - Golden State was not a kind visitor for the Boston Celtics, as the Warriors thoroughly dominated the Celts at the TD Garden, 108-88, on March 5. Just how dominant were the Warriors? The key stat: the Celtics were outscored 58-32 in the paint for the game. While five Celtics scored in double figures, it was reserve center Kelly Olynyk who led the way with 19 points coming off the pine. Rajon Rondo was the leading performer among the Celtics’ starters, picking up 14 points, seven assists, five rebounds, a steal and a blocked shot.
2/28/14 - The Boston Celtics returned to winning after a five game losing streak going back to before the All Star Game, knocking off playoff contender Atlanta 115-104 on February 26. Guard Jerryd Bayless led six Celts – including all five starters – with a game high 29 points; fellow guard Rajon Rondo, in the lineup despite a controversial absence during the team’s last visit to the West Coast, had 22 points and 11 assists in the winning effort. Gerald Wallace led the way defensively for the Celtics with 10 rebounds. The Celtics will entertain the high-flying Indiana Pacers this weekend.
2/20/14 - As the trade deadline approached, Boston Celtics coach Brad Stevens gathered his charges at their Beverly Hills hotel, according to a story on ESPN.com, and reassured the players that the Celts’ front office had no deals in the works. As it turned out, he was right, as Boston’s roster remained intact as the hour of the deadline passed. The Celtics were in Los Angeles preparing for what was, once upon a time, a marquee matchup with the Los Angeles Lakers; however, much of the luster is gone from both once-proud squads, neither of whom figures in postseason talk at the moment.
2/10/14 - Despite a home loss to Dallas on February 9, some good news was found by the Boston Celtics: guard Rajon Rondo very nearly collected a triple double (15 points, 12 assists and eight rebounds) in 37 minutes of playing time. While the starting backcourt of Rondo and Avery Bradley (right ankle injury) were not expected to play in the Celts next game against Milwaukee, team officials expected that Rondo’s recovery from ACL surgery had progressed to the point where he would not be held out of back-to-back games.
2/3/14 - With Rajon Rondo back – having started all seven games he’s played this season, most recently a double-double in the team’s weekend win over Orlando – could the Boston Celtics move fellow point guard Avery Bradley at the trade deadline later in February? While trade rumors are swirling around the Celtics, who are said to be in a rebuilding mode, the inclusion of Bradley, along with Gerald Wallace and Jeff Green, is a new twist on the Celts’ planning. Of course, the “sources” for Bradley’s inclusion could be very, very wrong – only time will tell.
1/10/14 – The 2008 NBA Champions have hit a rough patch, losing six in a row and nine of their last ten including one to Doc Rivers and the Los Angeles Clippers. Good news is the Celtics are just 1.5 games back of a playoff spot in the East and their star point guard Rajon Rondo (ACL) announced he is targeting a pre All-Star game return. Will Rondo be back when Pierce and Garnett make their return to TD Garden on Jan 26? Nets vs. Celtics tickets are averaging $196, the second most expensive game remaining on the Boston Celtics 2014 schedule.
4/4/13 – The Boston Celtics clinched a Playoff spot last night with a win over the Detroit Pistons. If the NBA Playoffs started today, the C’s would be a seventh seed and get a first round matchup against the New York Knicks. It’s possible that the Celtics could play the Indiana Pacers, who currently hold the three seed and may be a better matchup considering Boston is 2-0 against Indiana this season (vs. 1-3 against New York). The Celtics will see the Pacers one more time in the regular season at TD Garden – the cheapest of the Celtics four remaining home games. Boston hopes to see KG back on the court; after missing seven consecutive games with an ankle injury, his return should bring intensity and a significant interior presence on defense and on the boards.
2/14/13 - With 17 total titles, the Boston Celtics are the most successful team in NBA history, most recently in 2008, while coming close again in 2010, and taking last season's champs from Miami to a Game Seven in the conference championships. This year, however, sees the C's struggling somewhat behind resurgent squads in New York and Brooklyn, to stay in playoff contention. After last season, the Celtics lost Ray Allen to Miami via free agency; and this season have also lost key players such as Rajon Rondo and Leandro Barbosa to knee injuries requiring surgery. Veterans Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett continue to have success, while players such as Avery Bradley, Jason Terry and Brandon Bass are adequate fill-ins and bench strength.
Interestingly enough, the Celtics are averaging as many points scored per game as they are allowing, which may contribute some to their hovering close to the break-even point record-wise. One decided weakness of coach Doc Rivers's squad is rebounding; the Celtics rebounds per game average is better only than the defending NBA champs. The Celtics also need to improve their performance in games away from the TD Garden if they expect to have a deep playoff run in the 2013 postseason. Celtics tickets at the Garden in Boston average $111, with cheap Celtics tickets under $20 in the Balcony level for select 2013 home games. On the road, Boston Celtics tickets average $173 — only the Los Angeles Lakers and world champion Miami Heat are more popular visiting teams. Heading to TD Garden to see Celtics basketball? The upcoming Boston Celtics schedule includes games versus the Atlanta Hawks, Miami Heat, New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets.
Boston Celtics 2013-2014 Season
While the Celtics wait for Rajon Rondo’s return to the lineup, the rest of the young roster will get some experience. New head coach Brad Stevens is looking to find a solid rotation in the meantime, one that can compete in the final minutes when the game is on the line. One of four winless teams after the first week of the season, Celtics fans should not worry. Boston will get stronger, healthier, Jared Sullinger is not 100%, Avery Bradley re-aggravated his left index finger (X-rays came back negative), and of course Rondo will be back from his torn ACL shortly. Lets not forget that the Celtics point guard, Phil Pressey, returned to practice about two weeks ago after suffering from a sprained ankle. Despite all the changes for the 17 x NBA Champs this offseason, Boston Celtics tickets are up 30% over last season, averaging $164. The Celtics have the most inventory listed on the secondary market
this season, a trend we find often among big market teams.
After the Celtics were thoroughly outmatched by the rival New York Knicks in the first round of the 2013 playoffs, GM Danny Ainge decided it was time to press the resent button. The Celtics traded away veterans Kevin Garnet, Paul Pierce, and Jason Terry and even swapped Coach Doc Rivers for a first-round pick. Garnet and company will return to TD Garden for the first time as members of the Brooklyn Nets on 1/26. New coach Brad Stevens will face his predecessor Rivers on 12/11, when the Los Angeles Clippers make their annual trip to Boston.
