New York Yankees 2014 News and Updates
4/15/14 - The New York Yankees were scheduled to play the Chicago Cubs today but that never happened as the game has been postponed due to rain in New York. The game will now be made up tomorrow as part of a day and night double header with the latter game going for an average of $168.
4/14/14 - Heading into Sunday the New York Yankees were looking to put an exclamation point on their four game series with the Boston Red Sox having already won two of the first three games. Yankees pitcher Ivan Nova made sure that New York would get the win as he had his best start yet going 7 ? innings while only giving up two runs as he picked up his second win of the season. Tomorrow the Yankees battle the Chicago Cubs in a game that has seen ticket prices increase by a record 51% since last to currently average $109 per ticket.
4/11/14 - The New York Yankees had their first of 19 meetings with the Boston Red Sox on Thursday beginning the season series at home. In the game Yankees pitcher Michael Pineda made his debut at Yankee Stadium and had a very nice outing going into the seventh before giving up a run, picking up the win in the process. They will meet again this evening when New Yorks ace CC Sabathia goes up against Jon Lester of the Red Sox with Yankees tickets garnering an average price of $93.
4/10/14 - Yesterday saw the debut of the highly touted Japanese free agent signing Masahiro Tanaka at Yankee Stadium. While Tanaka may not have earned the win he did earn the respect of Yankees fans who saw him pitch very well for only his second major league start going seven innings fanning 10 while giving up three runs in the process. Today the Yankees welcome their rival Boston Red Sox to town to begin a four game series.
4/9/14 - On Wednesday the New York Yankees will see their prized free agent signing Masahiro Tanaka make his Yankee Stadium debut when they play the Baltimore Orioles. Yesterday the Orioles had a field day from the plate knocking in 20 hits and 14 runs in the victory but they will be hard pressed to do the same today when they face Tanaka which will run you around $85 for Yankees tickets today.
4/8/14 - It finally happened yesterday, the Yankees were the last team in the MLB to have their Home Opener wherein they played the Baltimore Orioles. Yankees pitcher Hiroki Kuroda threw a great game as he helped New York get on the right side of .500 for the first time this year. The two teams will play again today with Yanks sending out Ivan Nova to try and pick up his second win of the season.
4/7/14 - Today the New York Yankees will have their home opener, the final one of Derek Jeter’s storied career with the Bronx Bombers. The Yankees will play the Baltimore Orioles today at Yankee Stadium after beating the Toronto Blue Jays a day ago. There are still plenty of Yankees tickets available for todays game which will see them going for $56 on average.
4/4/14 - It took the New York Yankees three games to get their first win of the 2014 season, but they finally got it last night against the Houston Astros. The Yankees pitcher Ivan Nova picked up the win for the game giving up just two runs over 5 ? innings of work. New York will now travel to Toronto to play the Blue Jays before returning to the Bronx for their home opener next week.
4/3/14 - The New York Yankees have not started the season as they had hoped losing for the second time to the Houston Astros last night 3-1. The Yankees will look to Ivan Nova to try and stop the bleed and avoid being swept tonight when they play the final game of the series against the Astros.
4/2/14 - Opening Day was a rough one for CC Sabathia and the New York Yankees. CC got off to a bad start in the first and was never able to recover after giving up four runs in the bottom of the first to the Houston Astros. Today the Yanks will look to pick up their first win of the season behind Hiroki Kuroda when he takes mound at Minute Maid Park tonight.
4/1/14 - Today the New York Yankees and the iconic Derek Jeter begin their 2014 season on the road against the Houston Astros. It is no secret that Jeter will be retiring at the conclusion of the season, which will see an extraordinary amount of praise for him, in addition to the Yankees doing everything they can to send him out with yet another World Series Championship.
3/31/14 - As the rest of the majors begins baseball today, the Yankees get one last day of rest before starting their 2014 campaign tomorrow against the Astros. C.C. Sabathia will get the ball with Scott Feldman taking the mound for Houston. Based on rotation scheduling, it appears Tanaka will make his major league debut this Friday and his Yankee Stadium debut next Wednesday against Baltimore so make sure to grab Yankees tickets now!
3/28/14 - As the ace of the New York Yankees pitching staff CC Sabathia got his last bit of work in yesterday's game gearing up for his Opening Day start against the Houston Astros. Sabathia struggled at times last season but despite all that he has pitched great this Spring Training including Wednesday where he threw four scoreless innings against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
3/27/14 - Yesterday was not a good day for the New York Yankees who lost their second game in a row, but it was an even worse day for the Yankees pitcher Preston Claiborne who took the loss. The young pitcher played well out of the bullpen last season but this year has been struggling and manager Joe Girardi has noticed that his stuff wasn’t the same and may be losing faith in the player.
3/26/14 - The New York Yankees took a beating yesterday from the Philadelphia Phillies who knocked around the Yankees pitchers on the way to their shutout victory. The Phillies faced nine different pitchers and were able to get nine hits off them scoring six runs in the process. The Yankees did have a bright spot as their Captain Derek Jeter got a hit in the game but is hitting a dismal .128 this spring training.
3/25/14 - Today the New York Yankees will play a rematch of the 2009 World Series when they host the Philadelphia Phillies. Expected to make the start for the Yanks will be David Phelps who was in contention for the final spot in the rotation but by all accounts lost out in the battle for the fifth spot to Michael Pineda. Phelps will now be used as a middle reliever who makes the occasional start for New York when they begin regular season play.
3/24/14 - Despite picking up the loss in the game yesterday for the New York Yankees, Michael Pineda had a very nice outing and cemented his spot in the Yankees rotation come Opening Day. Pineda has been a pleasant surprise this Spring Training after sitting out the past two seasons with injuries since being acquired via trade from the Seattle Mariners.
3/21/14 - The New York Yankees have just 10 days until the start of the regular season and last night played their rivals, the Boston Red Sox. The Yankees played mostly their backup players in this game to feel out the bottom of their bench players a little bit better before having to make cuts and ended up winning the game. Of concern for the Yankees has to be Brendan Ryan who was a last second scratch with back spasms and may not be healthy enough to be Derek Jeters backup come Opening Day.
3/20/14 - The New York Yankees must be feeling good about this upcoming season having won yet another game last night over the Atlanta Braves. Ivan Nova started the game for the Yanks and went six innings deep into the shutout victory for New York who brought their bats as well notching seven runs with newly acquired Carlos Beltran leading the way with three hits and two RBI’s.
3/19/14 - The New York Yankees hosted the defending World Series Champion Boston Red Sox yesterday but the final score wasn’t the biggest story of the game. While the Yankees won the game 8-1 the real story of the game were the bees who swarmed the outfield in the bottom of the third inning to create a stoppage of play until they left the area and was reminiscent of the 2007 incident where Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain was attacked by bugs while on the mound in a playoff game versus the Cleveland Indians.
3/18/14 - Monday’s afternoon game for the New York Yankees against the Pittsburgh Pirates was cancelled due to rain. Today however is a much bigger game for the Yanks as they take on defending World Series Champion and bitter rival the Boston Red Sox at George M. Steinbrenner Field. Taking the mound today for the Yankees will be Michael Pineda who has looked great thus far in Spring Training after missing the past two seasons with injuries.
3/17/14 - This weekend the New York Yankees traveled down to Panama to play an exhibition game against the Miami Marlins as a tribute to their former Closer Mariano Rivera who retired at the end of last season. The Yanks were no hit by the Marlins on Saturday but came back on Sunday with a new sense of energy and took the second game of the series by a score of 7-0. Today the Yankees travel back to the States to play the Pittsburgh Pirates as we countdown the days until Opening Day.
3/14/14 - The Yankees got some very encouraging signs yesterday when former up and coming prospect pitcher Michael Pineda threw a solid 2 2/3 innings of shutout baseball as he attempts to earn the fifth and final spot in New York’s rotation this season. Brett Gardner also had a productive day hitting an RBI double showing their dominance as a team on the way to putting up 6 runs in total on the Orioles.
3/13/14 - While the New York Yankees didn’t come away with the victory yesterday they should be proud of how they played, scoring two runs in the bottom of the 9th inning to send the game into extra innings before calling it a draw in the 10th. Hiroki Kuroda had a rough outing for the Yanks surrendering 10 hits and six runs in just 3 ? innings but the team was able to overcome that thanks to Francisco Cervelli and Carlos Beltran who both went yard for the Bombers.
3/12/14 - Yesterday was not a good day for the Yankees and especially not a good day for their workhorse pitcher CC Sabathia who gave up three earned runs in just three innings of baseball to the Washington Nationals while testing out his new cutter. The same could not be said for Sabathia’s counterpart on the Nats Jordan Zimmermann who pitched a perfect four innings in this Spring Training game. From here the Yanks will look to rebound today when they play the Detroit Tigers this afternoon.
3/11/14 - The New York Yankees will look to get back to their winning ways after playing to a 3-3 tie on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Rays to go along with having Monday off. Today the Yanks will send out the new slimmer version of CC Sabathia to take the mound when they travel to play the Washington Nationals in Grapefruit League play and it is still unknown if he will have the same type of velocity now that he has lost a significant amount of weight.
3/10/14 (PM) - A couple weeks into Spring Training, the New York Yankees have likely found their fifth starter. In his first spring appearance (Sunday), David Phelps pitched five scoreless innings against the Tampa Bay Rays; an impressive performance that has bolstered right-hander's chances of joining Sabathia, Kurdora, Tanaka and Nova in the rotation. Get New York Yankees tickets now and see why they are "MLB's most talked about team" and one of the most exciting to watch. See the Yanks take on some stiff competition when the Detroit Tigers pay them a visit this Wednesday (get-in for $35), or save a couple bucks and watch them take on the Orioles for $17 and the Twins for $9 at Steinbrenner Field.
3/10/14 - As Derek Jeter prepares for his final season playing for the New York Yankees the future first ballot Hall of Famer is beginning to look like his old self going 4 of his last 7 after struggling to get his first hit going hitless through his first 10 at bats. Another bright spot for the Yankees this spring training has been the pitching of Michael Pineda who is vying for the fifth and final spot in the rotation since being acquired by them a few years ago and injuries preventing him from making his debut with the Bronx Bombers.
3/7/14 - In yesterdays spring training game against the Philadelphia Phillies the New York Yankees sent out their star free agent signing Masahiro Tanaka to take the mound after an hour and a half rain and tornado delay. Tanaka pitched well in his first start with the Bronx Bomber going three innings and giving up just two hits with the Yankees ending up taking the game 4-3.
3/6/14 - The Yankees lost a tough game yesterday to AL East divisional opponent the Tampa Bay Rays 5-4, but held a lead in the game before taking out its starters to play its backups. Today, the Yankees will play the Philadelphia Phillies but the real story will be Masahiro Tanaka who will be pitching against major league players for the second time in his career.
3/5/14 - Yesterday the New York Yankees played a spring training game against AL East foe Baltimore and ended up losing by a score of 3-2. Starting the game for the Bronx Bombers was David Phelps who didn’t help his case to become the fifth starter in the rotation this year as he gave up 5 hits and a run in just 2 ? and will need to pitch better if he is going to earn that starting spot.
3/4/14 - The New York Yankees were able to get out to an early lead yesterday and never looked back en route to beating the Washington Nationals 4-2 in Spring Training. This year the Yankees have a new closer, David Robertson, taking over the spot left vacant by all-time saves leader Mariano Rivera. Unfortunately, Robertson didn’t have his best outing, hitting the first batter he saw before settling down and getting out of the inning.
3/3/14 - New acquisition Masahiro Tanka made his Yankees debut Saturday, pitching two scoreless frames and striking out three. The Yankees defeated the Phillies 4-0, but it was Tanaka’s entrance in the fifth inning that sparked the most discussion. Tanaka signed a seven year, $155 million dollar deal in the offseason and expectations are certainly high for the Japanese product.
2/24/14 - Exciting news for Yankees fans making the trek to Tampa! Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston may faceoff against the New York Yankees in their first spring training game. The Yankees will be taking on Florida State University, with their quarterback in the closer slot. Manager Joe Girardi thinks, "It will be fun to watch. He's got a great arm." Derek Jeter is due to play his first spring training game on Thursday, when NY takes on the Pirates (2/27), and you can get in on the action for just $5! Since spring training started, New York Yankees tickets have climbed up to $49 on average.
2/18/14 - After a stellar offseason, as far as smart acquisitions and players getting healthy, Mark Teixeira stated: "We're back to being the Yankees again. Last year, we weren't the Yankees…No excuses this year, we have a team that can compete for a world championship." This revelation could not have come at a better time, because the New York Yankees were just dealt the inevitable blow that would herald the end of an era: Derek Jeter says he will retire after the 2014 season. The shortstop, and face of the franchise, will be heading into his 20th MLB season and 40th birthday, and hopes this will be the perfect season to ride off into the sunset. Send this legend off right and watch him partake in his last Spring Training ever! New York Yankees tickets for their first game of the spring against the Pittsburgh Pirates are up $5 but still just $10 to start.
2/11/14 - In an effort to evade a snowstorm and make it in-time for camp, Masahiro Tanaka rented a Boeing 787 to fly in six passengers (including himself) from Japan. If this flashy New York debut is any indication of how this larger-than-life Japanese pitcher will play in the Big Apple, we're in for an exciting season (and six more after that). This high-profile player will report for camp in three days, and you can see him take the mound up close during Spring Training. Get Yankees tickets for their exhibition game against the Florida State Seminoles (2/25) for $2 or against the Pittsburgh Pirates for $5. These are the lowest prices you'll find all year for this star-studded New York team, take advantage of them!
1/30/14 - MLB’s looming offseason question, “what team will land Japanese super star Masahiro Tanaka?” was answered by none other than big-market team, the New York Yankees. The Bombers awarded the right-hander the richest contract for an international free agent in the history of MLB. You’ve got to see Tanaka take the field during Spring Training with other big-name acquisitions: Jacoby Ellisbury, Cesar Beltran, Brian Roberts and Brian McCann. New York Yankees tickets for Spring Training games are a reasonable $47 on average. Get out there and see this talent unleash this spring!
7/25/13 - While earlier reports of the Bronx Bombers’ demise may have seemed premature, there is still a strong possibility of two things happening to the Evil Empire: one, the Yanks stay well above .500 for the rest of the season yet fail to make the playoffs; or two, age finally catches up with them, as it seems to be doing to both Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter, neither of whom have seen time in the starting lineup. Haters hope – yet fans fear -- it could be a long, dry stretch run for the Yankees.
New York Yankees 2014 Season
The New York Yankees have been making headlines all year, and it’s not just because of Alex Rodriguez’s suspension. The Yankees’ first move this winter was to acquire former Atlanta Braves’ catcher, Brian McCann, to clean up their sloppy game behind the plate. Many Yankee fans were certain that long time Bomber Robinson Cano would be offered a hefty contract, he was, but with the Seattle Mariners
(at $240 million for 10 years). This gaping hole left at second base has since been filled by Brian Roberts, backed by Kelly Johnson and Brendan Ryan as utility players. Ryan is also going to be used at reliever for Derek Jeter, who will be making his return after missing 145 games last season.
Perhaps the question in MLB was: which team would land coveted Japanese ace Masahiro Tanaka? The New York Yankees came through with a seven-year $155 million deal, beating out numerous other large offers for the right-hander (in addition to a $20 million fee to his Japanese team). Their loaded bullpen will now feature CC Sabathia, Hiroki Kuroda, Ivan Nova and David Phelps in the starting rotation. The Bronx’s front office has made so much noise this offseason; you’ve got to see if it all pays off with some New York Yankees tickets today!
35 years ago, New York Yankees reliever Sparky Lyle wrote The Bronx Zoo — a book detailing the circus that was the 1978 New York Yankees. The 2013 Yankees could very well raise memories of those years, with a combination of media-darling stars, players returning from injuries, and the pressure-cooker situation that is inherent in being the subject of intense scrutiny and high expectations, by both New York City media, and fans. Coming back from injury are shortstop and team captain Derek Jeter, and shutdown closer Mariano Rivera — both of whom are also reaching an advanced age for high-level baseball success. While offensive catalyst Robinson Cano returns healthy and strong, another batting star, Curtis Granderson, recently suffered a broken arm which will leave him on the disabled list for an extended period. Also worth keeping an eye on is Alex Rodriguez. After C.C. Sabathia, Yankees starting pitching is also suspect; Andy Pettitte, Phil Hughes, Ivan Nova and Hiroki Kuroda are either advancing in age (Pettitte) or are very inconsistent (Hughes, Nova, Kuroda). In case Rivera is either ineffective or chooses to retire (or both), the Yanks acquired closer Rafael Soriano from Washington. So whether you know them as the Evil Empire, or as the Bronx Bombers, skipper Joe Girardi's squad will always be in the news.
Yankees tickets average $80 in the Bronx, the 8th most expensive MLB tickets this season. While it's no surprise the New York Yankees are one most popular baseball teams, it's hard to believe the Subway-rival New York Mets have higher average ticket prices at Citi Field in 2103, almost $10 more per ticket than the Bronx Bombers. Who do Yankees fans want to see play at Yankee Stadium? The 2013 Yankees schedule includes must-see series with the Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets
, and world champion San Francisco Giants. New York Yankees tickets for each of these series average $100 or more per ticket. Baseball fans wanting to enjoy Yankee Stadium without a high ticket price tag should checkout home games versus the Arizona Diamondbacks, Houston Astros, Miami Marlins, Philadelphia Phillies and Pittsburgh Pirates — all average under $50. Cheap Yankees tickets to these Yankee Stadium games are as low as $5 in the Grandstands. On the road, the Yankees are the most popular team again in 2013; away game tickets average $127 — the highest in the League and $47 more per Yankees baseball ticket than at home.
