New York Mets 2014 Season
The New York Mets put in a lot of work this offseason to fix a notoriously bad outfield and bullpen desperate for some veteran experience. Saving up over the last couple years, the Mets were able to acquire Curtis Granderson and Chris Young for the outfield and pitcher Bartolo Colon, who will help relieve Matt Harvey (out this season due to Tommy John surgery). Most of New York’s roster is all-but solidified, but the Mets are still on the prowl for a shortstop to rev up their infield.
Though the Mets are coming off of their fourth straight losing season, the front office’s work this winter is sure to pay off! The additional players will hopefully bolster a poor slugging percentage, and reduce their high strikeout numbers. Luckily, all those penny-pinching years will finally pay off, with three big free agent players coming in to give the New York Mets a much-needed surge!
2012 was another year of struggles for the New York Mets, who wound up fourth in a very competitive division behind Washington, Atlanta, and Philadelphia, seven games under the break-even point and just five games ahead of Miami. Leading the returnees for the Mets is third baseman David Wright, who led the team in just about every offensive category but triples (Andres Torres) and homers (Ike Davis). The Mets troubles in fielding a consistent lineup showed in 2012, as only three players — Wright, Davis, and Daniel Murphy — had enough plate appearances to qualify for the batting title. On the mound though, 2012 was a year of firsts for the Mets, as Johan Santana threw the first no-hitter in 50 years of club history, and R.A. Dickey (now departed) became the first knuckleballer to win the Cy Young Award. Dickey's contributions will be difficult for the Mets to replace — 20 wins and 230 strikeouts. Dickey was also one of only two Met pitchers with enough innings pitched to qualify for the earned run average crown, along with Jonathon Niese, second on the team in wins and whiffs. While an evening at
Citi Field is always entertaining, a fully-loaded squad in Washington plus an Atlanta Braves team who was actively upgrading in the offseason, means the Mets may be fighting for third place at best in 2013.
New York Mets tickets at Citi Field average $96 in 2013, the sixth most expensive MLB tickets this season and fifth most expensive in the National League. The two-game Subway series versus the New York Yankees in May will be the Mets most popular home series; tickets average $208, more than double the Mets average home game tickets price. Other notable series on the 2013 Mets schedule include games with the Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia Phillies, and Interleague games with the Detroit Tigers and Kansas City Royals. Surprisingly, when the NY Mets host the world champion San Francisco Giants, Mets tickets average just $82 — that's $40 per ticket less than the average SF Giants road game, and only the Mets home series with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Houston Astros have lower average ticket prices. Mets fans looking to score cheap Mets baseball tickets will find seats under $15 in the Promenade level at most 2013 home games. Away from the Big Apple, the Mets continue to be one of the ten most popular MLB teams this season, with an average road games tickets price of $87.
