Chicago White Sox News – 2013 White Sox Updates

4/3/13 - White Sox Manager Robin Ventura said his team had only one goal – to make the MLB Playoffs. Chicago has seven months before postseason begins and regular season games have already started. Five of the eight series that the Chicago White Sox will play this month will be at home. Opening Day against the Royals had an average ticket price of $87; in comparison that is almost double the cost of any other game at US Cellular Field in April. It was announced yesterday that the Chicago White Sox vs. Texas Rangers game on August 24 at U.S. Cellular Field will now be called the “Civil Rights Game.” It will be the third time in seven years that the White Sox will play in what is becoming a regular game on the MLB schedule.

Although White Sox GM Kenny Williams called 2012 a rebuilding year, the team still managed an 85-77 record and finished just 3 games back of the Central Division lead. The club led the division for most of the season before succumbing to the streaking Tigers in late September. After fading down the stretch of the 2012 season, second-year manager Robin Ventura looks for his team to rebound and capture their first division title since 2008.

The White Sox had a relatively quiet offseason, but did manage to re-sign ace Jake Peavy and righty Gavin Floyd. The Sox will look for major contributions from newly signed third baseman Jeff Kepinger, who boasts one of the lowest strikeout rates in all of baseball. After 8 years behind the plate, AJ Pierzynski left for Boston in free agency, giving Tyler Flowers a chance to step up this season. Following Pierzynski’s departure, captain Paul Konerko is the only remaining player from the White Sox 2005 World Series Championship team.

White Sox tickets prices to see a game in 2013 at US Cellular Field average about $68, about $10 less than the league average. The White Sox have the 15th most expensive home tickets in the MLB, but 2nd most expensive in the AL Central after the Twins. The most expensive Sox home games this season are the first half of their home-home series against the cross-town Cubs and the Yankees.
