Historically speaking, the BCS system, which stands for Bowl Championship Series, evolved as an answer to the problem of how to best determine a consensus national champion. At this time, there were only the final AP and UPI polls, in which selected media members and coaches named their own top-ranked teams respectively. In years where both polls named the same number one team, that team was viewed as the unofficial national champion. In years where the polls named two different teams, a “split national championship” was the result. Still, there was often the problem that the two best teams could not play each other at the end of the season due to the obligations of conferences to specific bowls. Attempts to remedy the situation began in 1992 with the Bowl Coalition, later reformed into the Bowl Alliance. In both cases, however, the non–participation of the Rose Bowl meant that the Big Ten and Pac Ten winners were not eligible for the national championship game.
