First played in 1971, the Fiesta Bowl doesn’t have quite the lengthy tradition of the Rose, Orange, and Sugar Bowls, but it’s already taken its place among the others as one of the most prestigious postseason affairs. Phoenix ranks right there with Los Angeles, Miami, and New Orleans as a desirable winter destination. And the Fiesta has attracted some of the best matchups of the last decade- including a 43-42 overtime classic between Boise and Oklahoma, regarded by many as one of the greatest games in college football history. Fiesta Bowl History

From its birth as a postseason place for the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) football champion to play, to today’s major player in the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) rotation, the Fiesta Bowl continues to grow and attract the top teams to Arizona over the New Years holiday.

The Fiesta Bowl grew out of three consecutive years of major-bowl snubs of the WAC champion, two of those involving Arizona State. After one rejected offer, the NCAA committee in charge of bowl games approved the Fiesta Bowl organizing committee’s presentation in April 1971, and the first game was played on December 27, 1971. The initial matchup paired WAC champion Arizona State against Florida State, which the Sun Devils would win 45-38. The Sun Devils would win four of the next five games as well, with 1974’s game featuring Oklahoma State and Brigham Young being the only exception.

For 1981-82, the Fiesta Bowl joined the New Year’s Day bowl lineup, and the Penn State Nittany Lions became the second school to win back-to-back Fiesta Bowls (and third overall), knocking off USC. The first Fiesta Bowl to be played for the national championship came in 1987, when the Miami Hurricanes faced off against Penn State, the top-ranked two schools in the country. The 1996 game also featured the top two teams in the country, and Nebraska easily handled Florida, 62-24.

After the creation of the BCS for 1998, the Fiesta Bowl was host to the first BCS title game, won by Tennessee over Florida State, and then saw a historic, close-fought battle for the 2003 BCS crown with Ohio State’s double-overtime win over the highly-favored Miami Hurricanes.

Fiesta Bowl & University of Phoenix Stadium Facts

Penn State Nittany Lions have claimed six bowl wins, followed closely by Arizona State’s five wins and Ohio State’s four wins, including three of the last four Fiesta Bowls.

Florida State and Nebraska are the only other two programs which have more than one Fiesta Bowl win, with two each. Penn State and Arizona State have both appeared in a total of six Fiesta Bowls; the Miami Hurricanes, Nebraska, Ohio State and Pitt have appeared in four each.

For its entire history of play, the Fiesta Bowl has called Arizona State's Sun Devil Stadium home but that will change for 2007, as the 36th entry in the series will be played at the new University of Phoenix Stadium in the suburb of Glendale, west of Phoenix.

Prior to naming rights change the University of Phoenix Stadium, home of the AZ Cardinals was previously known as Cardinals Stadium or just referred to as Cards Stadium.
