Rose Parade History

The Rose Parade was first staged in 1890 by members of Pasadena's Valley Hunt Club. Former East and Midwest residents were eager to showoff California's warm winter weather. The first Rose Parade drew more than 2,000 people on New Year's Day to watch a parade of flower-covered carriages, followed by foot races, polo matches and tugs-of-war on the town lot. With the abundance of flowers it was suggested that "Tournament of Roses" was a suitable name for the festival.

Today's Rose Parade floats have come a long way since the early days. Although a few floats are still built by volunteers from their sponsoring communities, most are built by professional float building companies and take nearly a year to construct. The year-long effort pays off on New Year's morning, when millions of viewers around the world watch the Rose Parade.

The Rose Parade, preceding the Rose Bowl Game, now consists of about 60 floats of intricate design, elaborately decorated with flowers and illustrating some aspect of the parade's theme of the year. Interspersed among the floats are marching bands and costumed horses and riders, and included in the 5 1/2 mile long procession is the grand marshal and Rose queen.

The Rose Parade is never held on Sundays due to a more than a century-old tradition. Referred to as the "Never on Sunday" policy, officials decided in 1893 to avoid frightening horses tethered outside local churches (bells and choirs) and thus interfering with worship services.

Rose Parade Route & Grandstand Seating

The Rose Parade starts at 8AM. The 5 1/2-mile route takes floats about 2 1/2 hours to travel. The Rose Parade route starts at the corner of Orange Grove Blvd & Ellis St. It heads north on Orange Grove Blvd, then turns east onto Colorado Blvd where the majority of the parade takes place. The parade then turns north onto Sierra Madre Blvd where it ends at Sierra Madre Blvd & Villa St. Reserved grandstand seating along South Orange Grove Blvd and East and West Colorado Blvd are the best spots to view the Rose Parade from. And don't forget reserved parking. Its conveniently located near to the Rose Parade route on South Orange Grove Blvd and Colorado Blvd.
