Rose Bowl - A Closer Look

The Rose Bowl was the original bowl game, first played in 1902. Since that time the game has only grown in stature, with over 100,000 holders of Rose Bowl tickets regularly cramming into the stadium known as the Rose Bowl each January 1. Although the current capacity has been limited to 92,542, Rose Bowl tickets remain in great demand. With that many seats in the interior bowl there are endless seating and pricing options and we’ve got everything you need to make the best possible choice. In an era of newfangled designer stadiums, the Rose Bowl delivers a sense of history and charm that you just can’t find anywhere else. And of course it also regularly delivers intriguing matchups between some of the more elite teams in the game.

It’s been since 1947 that the Rose Bowl has matched up the champions of the Pac-10 and Big Ten Conferences. In 1998, with the game’s inclusion in the BCS, the caveat was added that at-large teams could be included as replacements if either the Pac-10 or Big Ten champion qualified for the championship game. That wasn’t the case last year as holders of Rose Bowl tickets witnessed a vintage Pac-10/Big Ten match-up: the progressive offense and wacky uniforms of Oregon up against the tradition and stubborn conservatism of Ohio State. Birkenstocks versus work boots. Pear Cider versus Bud six-pack. Innovative but inexperienced first-year Oregon coach Chip Kelly up against sweater-vested old-pro Jim Tressel. In this case, Ohio State and the Big Ten came out on top, with young quarterback Terrelle Pryor looking like the star Buckeye fans hoped he’d become. They are a leading contender to make it to Pasadena again in 2012, while the Pac-10 looks as wide open as ever. Either way, the matchup should be a good one and Rose Bowl tickets will surely be in great demand as always.

The game has been immensely popular right from the beginning, when those with Rose Bowl tickets watched Michigan defeat Stanford in the 1902 game, known then as the “Tournament East-West Game.” The concept at that time was to match a west coast team against a team from the east. After 1902 the game wasn’t played again until 1916, but it’s been played continuously ever since. Before long, Rose Bowl tickets were in such great demand that a new stadium was built in 1923, appropriately named the Rose Bowl, just to accommodate the event. Prior to 1978 the stadium was often cited as having the largest capacity of any football stadium in America. Even today it remains the eighth largest capacity in the country, and largest of all the bowl games. The only time that holders of Rose Bowl tickets watched the game at a different location was 1942, when World War II fears of a Japanese attack on the west coast prompted a one-year move to Durham, North Carolina. Five years later the agreements with the Pac-10 and Big Ten were established. As of the current day, USC has by far the most appearances (33) and wins (24) of any team. Michigan is second in both categories (20 and 8) followed by Washington and Ohio State. The most common matchup witnessed by holders of Rose bowl tickets has been USC-Michigan followed by USC-Ohio State. Individually, Archie Griffin and Brian Cushing stand out as the only two players ever to start the game four times. Among coaches, Woody Hayes and Peter Carroll are the only two to lead their teams to four consecutive appearances. Get your Rose Bowl tickets today and ring in 2013 in style in sunny Pasadena.
