Jay-Z’s ‘Magna Carta Holy Grail’ to be Released Ahead of Tour

While he hasn’t had quite as big a week as his friend Kanye West, Jay-Z did make a major announcement this weekend. During Game 5 of the NBA Finals, Samsung showed a 3-minute commercial revealing the release of Jay’s new album. Titled Magna Carta Holy Grail, the album will be available for free to one million Samsung phone owners this coming Independence Day and available to the general public on July 7.

The advertisement, shown above, also highlights album collaborators Timbaland, Pharrell, Swizz Beatz, and legendary hip hop producer Rick Rubin. It is also a good bet that Justin Timberlake will be featured on the album. Magna Carta will come just in time for Jay-Z’s Legends of Summer Tour with Timberlake and its already been confirmed that the duo have recorded more yet unreleased music. With the tour starting on July 17 in Toronto, most fans will have at least two weeks to apply the new tracks to memory before hearing them on stage.

2013 College World Series Tickets

college-world-series-ticket

The College World Series is underway, and ticket prices on the secondary market are changing. Unexpected matchups in the loser’s bracket, teams reaching the College World Series for the first time, and excitement building just before the games, are all contributors to the change in College World Series tickets prices. In general, prices for the earlier round games have decreased in cost while prices for the later rounds have increased since we took a look at CWS tickets on June 4.

Tonight, No. 1 seeded North Carolina will play No. 4 LSU in a matchup that baseball fans expected (and wanted) to see. The only difference is, the College World Series favorites were supposed to be playing in the winner’s bracket – not facing elimination this evening. Whoever loses tonight’s game will be packing their bags like Louisville did last night. The average price for this game is almost half the cost of what it was two weeks ago and has seen the largest drop in price of any game since. North Carolina vs. LSU is $26 less than the average price of Tuesday’s winner’s bracket game NC State vs. UCLA.

Despite being the last team to secure their spot in the 2013 College World Series, the Mississippi State Bulldogs are the first to win two games in Omaha. Mississippi State earned a bye until Game 11 where they’ll play the winner of Indiana vs. Oregon State – two teams they have already beaten in the CWS. The winner of Game 9 will have to beat the Bulldogs twice in a row to advance to the NCAA College World Series Finals. The Indiana Hoosiers (1-1) advanced to the College World Series for the first time in school history after a sweep of the Super Regional at Florida State. Tickets for Indiana vs. Oregon State Game 9 are up, the only early round game to see a price increase since June 4.

kanye-west-yeezus

What a week for Kayne West! The rapper became a father Saturday morning with girlfriend Kim Kardashian. West canceled his album listening session in LA Friday to be there for the labor and delivery of his baby girl. His sixth studio album, ‘Yeezus,’ will drop Tuesday, June 18. One album listening party that Kayne did not miss was at Milk Studios in NYC June 10. There, Kanye West explained the concept behind ‘Yeezus’ and that the album is “the beginning of an entirely new mentality on how to make music directly for the people.” He also confirmed collaborations with Daft Punk, and Rick Rubin at the last-minute.

“Simply put, West was my slave name and Yeezus is my God name.”

Kayne primarily recorded the album in Paris, but it contains a Chicago influence. Hype for the anticipated album began long ago but elevated last month when West debuted ‘New Slaves’ by projecting his face on 66 buildings across the world May 17.

USMNT riding wave of success in World Cup qualifying

us-soccer-mens-national-team

Currently riding the wave of a three-game win streak after a tough loss to Belgium, a side who many pick to be the surprise of 2014, the U.S. men’s national soccer team is exhibiting some of their best form under the direction of head coach Jürgen Klinsmann.  With five games played, the U.S. stands atop the CONCACAF Hexagonal fourth-round qualifying with 10 points and a 3-1-1 (W-L-D) record, two points clear of Mexico (1-1-5) and Costa Rica (2-1-2).

Starting with a wild 4-3 win over Germany, the Yanks then returned to World Cup qualifying, traveling to Jamaica’s National Stadium (also known as “The Office”) and registering their first-ever World Cup qualifier win there, a 2-1 thriller over the struggling Reggae Boyz.  Following that, just four days and a long trip from Kingston to Seattle later, Klinsi’s squad registered a solid 2-0 win over Panama, handing the Canaleros their first outright loss of the tournament.

Do Artists with Top 25 Albums on iTunes have the Most Demanded Concert Tickets?

justin-timberlake-album-downloads-legends-of-the-summer-tour
There has been much talk this past week about iTunes Radio music streaming service, also referred to as iTunes Radio, which Apple confirmed will launch this fall. Like Pandora and Spotify, there will be both a free option and a paid option without ads. At $24.99 per year, iTunes Radio’s ad-free option is cheaper than both competitors: Pandora $36/year and Spotify up to $120/year. With a low subscription fee and large selection of music, iTunes Radio has the potential to take over the industry. If you use iTunes, Apple has the ability to play the songs you’ll likely want to listen to through iTunes Radio. Songs you hear streamed on the radio service will be songs related to previous choices (i.e., searches and past downloads). Recommendations, however, are just that – not always the exact song you’ll want to listen to. In other words, iTunes Radio is a great promotional tool for Apple to market future downloads from iTunes. So while it may not be the first of it’s kind, iTunes Radio will know its consumer’s habits well and will be a product that can directly impact revenue, not only for Apple but artists and labels too.

With all this talk, we took a look at what’s trending this week on iTunes in order to see if artists with Top 25 album downloads have similar concert tickets demand based on average price. In most cases, the average price of a concert on the secondary market is a good indicator of how high demand is to see an artist or band live. In addition to an artist’s popularity, other factors like cities, venues, and number of tour dates also contribute to the price of a ticket. Fifteen of the twenty-five artists with top albums are (or will be) on tour. Of these artists on tour with a Top 25 album, Justin Timberlake tickets have the most expensive concert ticket at an average price of $255. Black Sabbath tickets are the next most expensive ($198), followed by Journey tickets ($189). JT, however, has only the fourteenth most downloaded album and Journey the twenty-fourth. One other notable difference is Big Time Rush, music similar to One Direction and The Wanted, who has the fourth most popular album but some of the cheapest concert tickets, averaging under $100. BTR will be on tour throughout the summer with Victoria Justice whose own debut album drops June 18th.
