Bellator MMA started in 2008 as a series of four- or eight-participant MMA tournaments. The tournament format is single-elimination. The tournaments are touted as “The Tournament in Sports” by Bellator promoters.

Bellator MMA has fighters in seven different weight classes: Bantamweight, Featherweight, Lightweight, Welterweight, Middleweight, Light Heavyweight and Heavyweight. There are also four women’s divisions at 115 pounds, 125 pounds, 135 pounds and 145 pounds. Like other MMA events, Bellator fights are decided in one of four ways: Submission, Knockout, Technical Knockout and Judges Decision.

The current champions of Bellator weight classes are as follows: Bantamweight, Eduardo Dantas, of Brazil; Featherweight, Daniel Mason-Straus, of the United States; Lightweight, Michael Chandler, of the United States; Welterweight, Andrey Koreshkov, of Russia; Middleweight, Rafael Carvalho, of Brazil; and Light Heavyweight, Liam McGeary, of Great Britain. The Heavyweight division currently has no champion.

The tournament final is when things really get intense. Here, fighters are allowed to make contact with their elbows, whereas this maneuver is illegal in preliminary rounds.
