The NFC South has historically been a competitive division, and this season should be no different. Two teams that could very well be in the thick of things are the Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints. As usual, these rivals will meet twice during the regular season. The first matchup will take place in New Orleans, Monday, Sept. 26. If you want to be a part of this exciting Monday Night Football game, use the Atlanta Falcons vs New Orleans Saints: NFC South Rivalry – Tickets and Guide to get your seats. Tickets start at $52.
New Orleans won both games last season. In the first meeting, the Saints prevailed at home, 31-21 despite 291 yards passing by Atlanta quarterback Matt Ryan. Prolific Saints quarterback Drew Brees went 30-39 for 312 yards and a touchdown. The Saints jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and was never seriously threatened. It was the Falcons’ first loss of the year in six games.
In the final game of the regular season, 11 weeks later, New Orleans topped Atlanta on the road 20-17 behind another strong game from Brees. This time, the gunslinger competed 32 of 42 passes for 323 yards and a touchdown. In a losing cause, Ryan amassed 334 yards passing and tossed a pair of touchdowns. The Saints’ defense was also impressive, shutting out the Falcons in the second half and allowing just 91 yards on the ground.
Neither squad qualified for the NFL playoffs last season. Atlanta finished with an 8-8 record, and New Orleans as a game behind at 7-9. Carolina ran away with the division title by going 15-1.
Atlanta and New Orleans are both eager to get back to the postseason. With Brees and Ryan returning to lead the Saints and Falcons, respectively, there’s no reason to think the two teams can’t make more of an impact in the NFC this season.
