Mountain West Conference rivals Air Force and New Mexico collide on the gridiron for the 34th time Saturday, Oct. 15 from the Cotton Bowl in Dallas Texas, and you can be there to see it all. The 2016 Air Force Classic: Air Force Falcons Football vs. New Mexico Lobos Football will be one of the most anticipated college football contests in the Mountain West. The Falcons lead the series 21-12 in a nearly annual matchup that began in 1957.
The Falcons have been perennial contenders in the Mountain West Conference, and the Western Athletic Conference before that, for more than three decades. Last season, the Falcons had another trademark solid season, going 8-6 and 6-2 in league play. Air Force fell to San Diego State 27-24 in the Mountain West title game and then lost in a shootout to Jared Goff and California, 55-36, in the Ft. Lauderdale Bowl. Other than an uncharacteristically poor 2-10 season in 2013, Troy Calhoun has won at least six games every year at the helm of the Falcons since taking over for the legendary Fisher DeBerry in 2007.
Meanwhile, New Mexico will be looking to build on last year’s 7-6 season in which they lost to Arizona in the New Mexico Bowl. It was the first winning season for the Lobos since 2007. Now, under head coach Bob Davie, who once was coach of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, New Mexico has the chance to have back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 2004–2005.
This year’s game between the Falcons and Lobos promises to be another exciting affair. A year ago, New Mexico won in a 47-35 thriller in the regular season finale. The last four meetings between the two teams have been decided by 12 points or less.
