The Rogers Cup, also known as the Canadian Cup and Canadian Masters, is one of the oldest tennis tournaments around. It was first played in 1881, and it alternates from Montreal to Toronto on both the men’s and women’s side. The men and women play separately in the two locations. The men will be showcased in Toronto this month.
Since its inception, the Rogers Cup has only been postponed 10 times, nine due to World War I and World War II. Currently played in a best-of-three format, the men’s championship last year came down to Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic, with Murray winning 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. It was Murray’s third tournament title; he won the event previously in 2009 and 2010. Djokovic was champion in 2007, 2011 and 2012. Ivan Lendl has had more championship matches titles and appearances than any other player. He reached the finals nine times, winning on six occasions, including three in a row from 1987–1989.
In the early years of the tournament, the format was best of five. It has been best of three consistently since 1970. Only two of the last six title matches have gone to a full three games.
The Aviva Centre holds 12,250 spectators, and you can be among the eager fans to catch a glimpse of top-notch players displaying their incredible talents. Hurry to get your Rogers Cup Tennis Tickets now!
